The wired Google Nest Doorbell has no battery of its own to fall back on, so if the low-voltage supply fails, it goes dark straight away. Power faults usually come back to the transformer, the wiring to the door or a tripped circuit.
Try the safe checks below, then ring 0421 772 661 if it's still dead and we'll test the supply.
The doorbell runs on low voltage, but its transformer is wired to mains power. Don't open the transformer, the switchboard or any junction box, and don't pull the doorbell wires out of the wall.
A hot, humming or scorched transformer is a warning sign. Switch off at the main switch if it's safe and call an electrician. If there's fire or someone has had a shock, call 000.
A completely dark doorbell usually means no power at all. A doorbell that lights up then restarts can point to a supply that's too weak. Check what the light means in the Google Home app or Nest help pages.
The transformer is often on a lighting or general circuit. Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch, reset it once, and leave it off if it trips again.
See whether the doorbell shows offline or has reported a power issue. If it shows offline but the light is on, the problem may be Wi-Fi rather than power.
Has anyone done painting, a door replacement or electrical work near the front door or switchboard lately? Disturbed wiring is a common cause.
If other things in the house are off, check Ausgrid's outage information or call 13 13 88.
Transformer not suitable or failed. Video doorbells draw more than a traditional bell. Australian homes often don't have a doorbell transformer at all, so one is added during installation. If it's under-rated or has failed, the doorbell won't run reliably. The required supply is listed in Google's installation instructions.
Wiring faults at the door. Thin, old bell wire, a loose terminal behind the doorbell, or a cable nicked when the door frame was worked on will stop power reaching it.
Chime or adaptor issues. Some setups use an existing chime or an adaptor in the circuit. If that part is wrong for the doorbell or has failed, power can be affected.
Device or Wi-Fi faults. If the supply measures correctly at the doorbell and it still won't start, the doorbell itself may be faulty, which is a Google support and warranty matter. If it powers on but won't connect, it's usually Wi-Fi or app setup.
Call a licensed electrician if the doorbell is completely dead with power on in the house, keeps rebooting, the transformer is hot or noisy, or the doorbell circuit trips.
We test the supply at the transformer and the door, replace an unsuitable transformer, and repair or replace bell wiring. Our Google Nest installation page covers how it should be wired.
The wired version is designed to run from continuous wired power, so it stops working when that supply fails. Check Google's specifications for your model.
A supply that's too weak is a common cause. The transformer rating and wiring should be checked against the installation instructions.
Only with an adaptor designed for that purpose. Otherwise it needs a properly installed low-voltage transformer, which is licensed electrical work.
Check Wi-Fi strength at the front door and the Google Home app. That's a network issue, not a power one.
