Google Nest Security camera installation.

Nest cameras and doorbells are set up and viewed in the Google Home app, and they can show on Google displays and announce visitors through speakers. Some models run on battery, others plug in, and the wired Nest Doorbell needs a constant low-voltage supply. Features like extended video history depend on a Nest Aware subscription, so check Google's current plans when budgeting.

The practical questions are mostly electrical and physical. Is there doorbell wiring and a transformer? Is there power where the outdoor camera should go? Is Wi-Fi strong at the front door? We answer those before you buy, so you end up with the right model for the spot.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, working across the Inner West and Sydney. We hold Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and NSW Security Licence S00014414, which is required for camera installation in NSW.

Know your model

Matching Nest products to your house.

The battery Nest Doorbell is the easy choice where there's no wiring and you don't want any. The wired Nest Doorbell is slimmer and doesn't need recharging, but its supply must meet the voltage and power stated in Google's installation guide. In older homes that means installing a transformer and cable rather than relying on a decades-old bell circuit.

Nest Cams for outdoors can run on battery or be powered continuously. For a camera watching a busy driveway, continuous power avoids frequent charging; that needs a weatherproof power source nearby. Indoor cameras just need a power point within cable reach. Check each model's power options in Google's documentation, since they vary.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Correct doorbell supply

Wired Nest doorbells need a supply that meets Google's specification. We install a suitable transformer and test the voltage at the door.

!

Chime compatibility

Some existing chimes work with the wired doorbell and some don't. We check yours and advise on options.

!

Outdoor power

For outdoor cameras on permanent power, a weatherproof outdoor power point installed by a licensed electrician.

!

Solid Wi-Fi

Nest devices stream over Wi-Fi. If signal at the door is weak, see our Wi-Fi dead spots guide.

!

Privacy

Keep views to your own property. NSW has surveillance laws, so avoid aiming into neighbours' windows or yards.

How it works

How we install it.

First we check what's already there: doorbell cable, chime, transformer, power near camera positions, and Wi-Fi strength.

Next we install any new supply or power point, run cable to the door or camera, and mount the devices on solid fixings with sealed entries.

We then help pair everything in the Google Home app, set activity zones and test notifications on your phone and any Google display.

Mains work is tested to AS/NZS 3000, and you get a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required.

Common problems

Common Google Nest problems.

!

Wired doorbell has no power

The supply may be too weak, a wire may be loose, or the circuit tripped. Check the switchboard first.

!

Doorbell restarting

Often a supply that's below what the doorbell needs, especially at night.

!

Camera keeps going offline

Usually Wi-Fi coverage, not wiring. A mesh node or access point closer to the camera helps.

!

Chime not ringing

Can be chime compatibility or a wiring connection at the chime.

Questions

Google Nest Security camera: common questions.

Can I install a wired Nest Doorbell myself?

If suitable low-voltage wiring and a transformer already exist, many people do. Any 240V work, including a new transformer, needs a licensed electrician.

My house has no doorbell wiring. What now?

Use a battery model, or we install a transformer and run new cable for a wired one.

Does Nest need a subscription?

Video history and some features rely on Nest Aware. Check Google's current plans; we don't sell them.

Can you put power outside for a Nest Cam?

Yes. We install weatherproof outdoor power points to AS/NZS 3000.

Are you licensed for camera installs?

Yes. NSW Security Licence S00014414 and Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.
