Arlo camera installation

Arlo is known for wire-free cameras that run on rechargeable batteries and connect over Wi-Fi, plus video doorbells and floodlight models. They're simple to start with, but placement and power make a big difference to how well they work.

Arlo

Arlo Security camera installation.

With an Arlo system there's usually no recorder in a cupboard. Cameras connect to your Wi-Fi, either directly or through an Arlo base station or hub depending on the model, and footage is viewed through the Arlo Secure app. Many cloud features, such as recorded video history and smart alerts, depend on an Arlo subscription; check Arlo's current plans before you buy, because the free features can differ from what you expect.

Because the cameras are battery-powered, people assume there's nothing for an electrician to do. In practice, we're often asked to mount cameras high and securely, sort out weak Wi-Fi, add an outdoor power point so a camera can stay plugged in, or wire a doorbell that needs a constant supply.

Blue Link Electrical is based in Hurlstone Park and installs cameras around the Inner West and Sydney. CCTV installation is licensed security work in NSW: we hold NSW Security Licence S00014414 and Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.

Battery, plugged-in or wired?

Most Arlo cameras can run purely on battery, and many can also be powered continuously with Arlo's charging cables or a solar panel accessory. Continuous power is worth it for busy spots like a front door, where frequent motion drains batteries fast. If you go that way, the camera needs a weatherproof power source nearby, not an extension lead through a window.

Arlo's video doorbells come in battery and wired versions. The wired type connects to existing doorbell wiring or a low-voltage supply that meets the manual's requirements. Older homes often have no doorbell wiring at all, so we check what's there and quote for a suitable supply if needed.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Strong Wi-Fi at the camera

Each camera, or its base station, needs reliable signal. We check signal at the planned position and suggest fixes if it's weak.

!

Secure high mounting

Cameras should be high enough to deter tampering but low enough to see faces, on solid fixings.

!

Outdoor power option

For continuous charging, a weatherproof power point near the camera, installed by a licensed electrician. See power point installation.

!

Doorbell supply

Wired doorbells need the correct low-voltage supply, typically a transformer, installed safely and to the manual.

!

Respecting neighbours

Aim at your own entries and yard. NSW has surveillance laws, so avoid filming into other people's homes or yards.

How it works

How we install it.

Plan positions. We walk the property with you, check Wi-Fi at each spot and agree on which cameras stay on battery and which get permanent power.

Power and mounting. Any outdoor power points or doorbell supplies are installed first, then cameras and mounts are fixed securely.

App setup. We help pair cameras and any base station to your Arlo account, set motion zones and alerts, and check the live view on your phone.

Test. We walk through each camera's coverage. Any electrical work is tested and certified as required.

Common problems

Common Arlo problems.

!

Batteries draining fast

High-traffic positions or sensitive motion settings. Narrowing zones or adding permanent power helps.

!

Camera offline

Usually weak Wi-Fi or a flat battery, not an electrical fault.

!

Wired doorbell not working

Could be the supply, the wiring or a tripped circuit. Check the switchboard; ongoing faults need testing.

!

Missed events

Cameras that wake on motion can miss fast movement. Placement and angle matter more than resolution.

Questions

Arlo Security camera: common questions.

Do Arlo cameras need an electrician?

Not for basic battery installs. You'll need one for an outdoor power point, a wired doorbell supply or any 240V work.

Does Arlo need a subscription?

Some features, like recorded video history, depend on an Arlo plan. Check Arlo's current plans; we don't sell subscriptions.

Can Arlo cameras be powered permanently?

Many can, using Arlo charging cables or a solar accessory. A weatherproof outdoor power point is the safe way to provide power.

Can you install an Arlo I've already bought?

Yes. We install customer-supplied products; warranty is with the retailer or Arlo.

Are you licensed for camera installation?

Yes. NSW Security Licence S00014414 and Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.
