Ring doorbell and camera installation

Ring, owned by Amazon, is best known for video doorbells, and also makes indoor and outdoor cameras and floodlight cameras. Battery Ring products are easy to fit yourself; the wired and mains-powered ones are where a licensed electrician comes in.

Ring

Ring Security camera installation.

Ring's range splits into three electrical groups. Battery doorbells and cameras need only a screwdriver and Wi-Fi. Wired doorbells need a constant low-voltage supply, normally from a transformer, connected to doorbell wiring. Floodlight and some spotlight cameras run on mains power and must be connected by a licensed electrician.

Many Inner West homes either have no doorbell wiring or have old wiring from a chime that hasn't worked for years. Hardwiring a Ring doorbell in those homes means installing a suitable supply and a new cable to the door, which is often the bulk of the job. Footage history and some smart features depend on a Ring subscription; check Ring's current plans.

Blue Link Electrical is based in Hurlstone Park. We hold Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C for the wiring, and NSW Security Licence S00014414, which covers camera installation in NSW.

Know your model

Battery or hardwired Ring?

Some Ring doorbells are battery-only, some can run on battery or wiring, and some are wired-only. Wired-only models are slimmer and never need charging, but they must have the right supply. The manual lists the voltage and power required, and the transformer must match. An undersized or incorrect supply is a common reason wired doorbells reboot or don't ring the chime.

Floodlight cameras replace or add an outdoor light and are connected to 240V. That's electrical work: the circuit, connection and weatherproofing must be done by a licensed electrician and comply with AS/NZS 3000. If you already have a sensor light in the right spot, its circuit can often be reused. See our outdoor lighting page.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Doorbell transformer

Wired doorbells need a low-voltage supply that meets Ring's specification, installed safely and protected from the weather.

!

Cable to the door

Old doorbell cable can sometimes be reused. If not, we run new cable from the transformer to the door frame.

!

Mains for floodlights

Floodlight cameras connect to a lighting circuit or a new circuit, with proper isolation and weatherproof connections.

!

Wi-Fi at the front door

Doorbells sit at the edge of the house, often behind brick. Check signal there before choosing a position.

!

Field of view

Doorbells naturally see some footpath; avoid aiming cameras into neighbours' homes. NSW has surveillance laws.

How it works

How we install it.

Check the existing setup. We look for doorbell wiring, a chime and a transformer, test Wi-Fi at the door and identify the circuit for any floodlight.

Wire and mount. We install the supply, run cable where needed, mount the doorbell or floodlight and seal everything against weather.

Pair with the Ring app. We help connect the device to your Ring account and Wi-Fi, set motion zones and test the chime or alerts.

Test and certify. Mains work is tested to AS/NZS 3000 and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required.

Common problems

Common Ring problems.

!

Doorbell keeps rebooting

Often a transformer that doesn't meet the doorbell's power needs, or a loose connection.

!

Chime doesn't ring

Can be the chime type, wiring or app setting. Older mechanical chimes may need checking for compatibility.

!

Floodlight not turning on

Check the switchboard for a tripped circuit and any wall switch. Ongoing faults need an electrician.

!

Offline in the app

Usually Wi-Fi strength at the door rather than wiring.

Questions

Ring Security camera: common questions.

Do I need an electrician to install a Ring doorbell?

Not for a battery model. For a wired model, if a new transformer or wiring is needed, a licensed electrician should do it.

Is a Ring floodlight camera DIY?

No. Anything connected to 240V in NSW must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Can you use my existing doorbell wiring?

Often, if the cable is in good condition and the supply suits the doorbell. We test before reusing it.

Does Ring need a subscription?

Recorded video history and some features depend on a Ring plan. Check Ring's current plans; we don't sell them.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and NSW Security Licence S00014414. We're fully insured.
