Wired Ring doorbell not working?

A hardwired Ring doorbell depends on a low-voltage supply, normally a doorbell transformer, to keep running. When it goes dead, keeps losing charge or stops chiming, the supply side is one of the first things to check.

Try the checks below. If it still won't behave, ring 0421 772 661 and we'll test the transformer and doorbell wiring.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

The doorbell itself runs at low voltage, but the transformer feeding it is connected to 230 V mains, often at the switchboard or in a ceiling. Don't open the switchboard, the transformer or any wiring enclosure.

If you notice heat, a burning smell or buzzing from a transformer, switch off at the main switch if it's safe and call an electrician. Call 000 if there's fire or injury.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Check the Ring app

Look at the device health or power information in the app. It can show whether the doorbell is receiving wired power or running on battery alone, if your model has one.

!

Check Wi-Fi at the front door

Front doors are often the furthest point from the router. If the doorbell shows offline but has power, poor Wi-Fi could be the reason.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch, especially one labelled doorbell, lights or similar. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off.

!

Charge the battery, if fitted

Some Ring doorbells have a built-in or removable battery. If it's flat, charge it as the manual describes, then see if it holds charge on wired power.

!

Check for a power outage

If the rest of the house or street is off, check Ausgrid's outage information or call 13 13 88.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Transformer fault or wrong rating. Video doorbells need more power than an old chime. A transformer that's under-rated for the doorbell, or that has failed, leaves the doorbell starved of power. Check the manual for the supply it needs and have the transformer confirmed.

Loose or corroded doorbell wiring. Old bell wire at the front door is often thin, brittle and exposed to the weather. A loose terminal behind the doorbell or a broken wire in the wall causes intermittent power.

Chime connection issues. Where a doorbell is wired with an existing chime, the chime type and wiring have to suit the doorbell. A mismatch can stop the chime ringing or affect the power supply.

Device, Wi-Fi or account issues. If the supply tests fine, the problem may be the doorbell, its Wi-Fi connection or the Ring account and subscription settings. Those are matters for Ring support; we'll confirm the wiring side first.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us if the doorbell shows no wired power, the battery won't hold up despite being wired, the transformer is hot or humming, or the doorbell wiring at the door is damaged.

We test the transformer and bell wiring, replace or upgrade the transformer where needed, and can run new low-voltage cable to the door. See our Ring installation page and our video doorbell guide.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my wired Ring doorbell keep running out of battery?

It may not be getting enough power from the transformer or wiring, so the battery is doing the work. The supply needs testing.

Can I install a doorbell transformer myself?

No. The transformer connects to mains wiring, which in NSW must be done by a licensed electrician.

My Ring is wired but won't connect to the app. Is it the wiring?

Not usually. If it has power, look at the Wi-Fi signal at the door and the app setup first.

Will my old chime work with a Ring doorbell?

It depends on the chime type. Check Ring's compatibility information for your model, or ask us to check the existing setup.

Do you repair Ring doorbells?

We fix the power and wiring. Faults inside the doorbell are handled by Ring's support and warranty.
