When every outlet in a bedroom or living room goes dead at once while the rest of the house carries on, the cause is usually somewhere along the chain that feeds that room, rather than the outlets themselves.
Here's how to narrow it down without opening anything. If the room stays dead, ring 0421 772 661 and we'll trace the break.
If any power point in the room is warm, discoloured, cracked or smells of burning, stop using it and turn off the power circuit at the switchboard if it's safe to reach. A failed connection that has cut off a room can also overheat. Call 000 if there's smoke, fire or an injury.
Don't unscrew power points or pull them from the wall to look at the wiring, and don't run the room on extension leads from another room as a long-term workaround.
Power points are usually wired one after another, like links in a chain. The supply comes from the switchboard to the first outlet, then on to the next, and so on. The outlets in one room are often on the same run, and sometimes share it with a neighbouring room or a hallway.
That means a single loose or burnt connection at one outlet can cut power to every outlet after it, even though they look fine. It also means the dead outlets don't always match the room boundaries: a point in the next room may be out too.
Use a lamp or phone charger you know works to test each outlet.
It sounds obvious, but check the switch on each outlet. Furniture and cleaners knock them off more often than you'd think.
Lights and power are usually on separate circuits. Working lights with dead outlets points to the power circuit or the chain.
Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch. Reset it once. If nothing has tripped, the fault is likely a break in the wiring.
If something did trip, unplug all appliances in the room before resetting, then plug them back one at a time.
Note exactly which outlets are dead, including in nearby rooms. That map helps us find the first outlet in the chain quickly.
Without unscrewing anything, check if any outlet is warm or marked. That one is often where the break is.
A loose or burnt connection at one outlet. This is the most common reason a room goes dead without anything tripping. Connections loosen with heat and age, and the one that finally breaks may be behind an outlet you rarely use. Older wiring, common in Inner West terraces and Federation homes, is especially prone.
A tripped breaker or safety switch. If something did trip, an appliance in that room may have a fault, or the circuit may have been overloaded by heaters and electronics. See safety switch keeps tripping if it won't stay on.
Damage from recent work. A picture hook, shelf screw or renovation work can nick a cable in the wall. If the room went dead soon after something was fixed to a wall, mention it.
A fault at the switchboard. Less often, the breaker itself or a connection in the board fails without tripping. We test from the board out to the room.
Call us if nothing has tripped but the room is still dead, if a breaker trips every time you reset it, or if any outlet is warm or marked. We find the break, repair the connection and test the whole circuit so it doesn't happen again elsewhere along the run.
If only one outlet is dead, see power point not working. If lights and power are out across several rooms, power out in part of the house is the better guide.
Usually a loose or burnt connection at one outlet has broken the chain feeding the others. An electrician needs to find and repair it.
Yes. Outlets are usually wired in a chain, so a failed connection at one can cut power to every outlet after it.
The dead outlets themselves aren't the danger; the failed connection can be, because it may have overheated. Stop using any warm or marked outlet and have it checked.
Lights and power are usually on separate circuits, so the power circuit or its chain has the fault.
Briefly, for essentials, with care. Long-term use can overload another circuit and hides a fault that needs fixing.
