Schweigen exhaust fan installation

Schweigen is an Australian brand best known for quiet rangehoods with the motor mounted outside the kitchen. Its bathroom ventilation follows the same focus on low noise.

Schweigen

Schweigen Exhaust fan installation.

People usually choose Schweigen because they're tired of noisy fans. A quiet fan matters in an ensuite next to a bedroom, or in a bathroom off a living area. Depending on the model, quiet operation may come from a remotely mounted motor, away from the room, with a grille in the bathroom ceiling and the fan unit further along the duct.

If your model uses a remote motor, the electrical work is in two places: control at the bathroom, and power to the motor in the roof space or on the roof. The installation manual sets out the wiring and isolation; we follow it closely.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We wire Schweigen fans across the Inner West and Sydney. We aren't a Schweigen agent; mounting a motor on the roof or sealing roof penetrations is coordinated with your builder or roofer. For kitchens, see Schweigen rangehood installation.

Know your model

Know where the motor will sit.

Before buying, confirm what type of unit you're getting. A ceiling-mounted fan with the motor in the unit is installed much like other exhaust fans. A remote-motor system needs a location for the motor, a duct from the bathroom grille to it, and a discharge to outside. Single-storey Inner West cottages often have roof space that makes this straightforward; a terrace bathroom under a low skillion roof may have very little room to work with.

Ducting to outside is part of the design of these quieter systems, which is good for the house, since moist air isn't left in the roof space. For control, check whether your model has a run-on timer or another control option and what wiring that needs. If the motor is outdoors, it needs suitable isolation and weatherproof connections.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Supply to the motor

Cable from the bathroom switch to the motor location, run and protected through the roof space.

!

Isolation

A way to isolate a remote or outdoor motor for servicing, as the manual specifies.

!

RCD protection

Wet-area and outdoor equipment must be on safety-switch-protected circuits.

!

Roof-space access

Enough space to mount the motor and run duct and cable. Low roofs need planning.

!

Other trades

Roof mounting and sealing penetrations are done by a builder or roofer.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Site check. We look at the bathroom, the roof space and possible motor positions, and review the installation manual with you.

2. Rough-in. We run the supply and control cabling to the motor position and the switch, with isolation set out.

3. Connect. Once the motor and duct are in place, we connect the fan and controls to Schweigen's instructions.

4. Test. We check operation, noise and controls, test to AS/NZS 3000 and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

Common problems

Common Schweigen problems.

!

Switch on, nothing runs

Could be the isolator off, the cable to the motor or the motor itself. See bathroom exhaust fan not working.

!

Tripping after rain

Water reaching outdoor connections. See power tripping when it rains.

!

Weak extraction

A long or kinked duct between grille and motor reduces airflow.

!

Motor fault

If power reaches the motor and it won't run, it's a warranty matter for the manufacturer.

Questions

Schweigen Exhaust fan: common questions.

Why is a Schweigen bathroom fan quieter?

Low noise is the brand's focus, and on remote-motor models the motor sits away from the room so less noise reaches you.

Do you mount the motor on the roof?

We do the wiring. Roof mounting and sealing are done by your builder or roofer.

Will it fit my terrace bathroom?

It depends on roof-space access and duct route. We'll check before you buy if you send photos.

Does it need a dedicated circuit?

Usually not for a bathroom fan, but check the manual. We'll confirm the circuit and protection on site.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Blue Link Electrical holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and is fully insured.
