If your Smeg induction cooktop has stopped responding, gone dark or won't bring a pan to temperature, there's a fair chance it's something simple. Lock functions, spills on the touch controls and tripped circuits account for a lot of service calls.
Go through the checks below. If the cooktop still has no power, call 0421 772 661 and we'll test the supply side.
Stop if you notice a burning smell, see smoke from beneath the bench, or the glass has cracked. Switch the cooktop off at the switchboard and leave it off. If there are flames, leave the kitchen and call 000.
Never prise the cooktop out of its cut-out or open the switchboard to check connections. Both involve live hard-wired parts.
Touch controls can stop responding, or the cooktop may turn itself off, if there's water or food over the control area. Clean it with the cooktop off and dry it fully.
Smeg cooktops typically include a control lock for safety. If the display is lit but nothing responds, check your manual for how to release it.
If one zone won't heat a particular pan, check it's induction-compatible and roughly the right size for the zone. Small or non-magnetic pans may not be detected.
Find the cooktop isolator switch, if fitted, and make sure it's on. It's often near the cooktop or in an adjacent cupboard.
Look for a tripped breaker or safety switch for the cooktop. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off.
It has power but won't respond. If the display lights up, the electrical supply is working. A lock, a protection cut-out, or an issue with the touch panel is more likely. Your manual and Smeg's support are the right starting point.
It's completely dead. No display at all usually points upstream: a tripped breaker, an isolator switched off, or a connection that has loosened and failed at the isolator or switchboard. We test the supply at the connection point and repair what's found.
It trips when used. A breaker that trips on high settings can mean the circuit is undersized for the cooktop, or a termination is overheating. A safety switch that trips points to leakage, either in the wiring or in the cooktop. Both need testing rather than repeated resets.
Internal electronics. When voltage is confirmed at the connection and the cooktop still doesn't work, the fault is in the appliance. That's a repair for Smeg's service network.
Book an electrician when the breaker is on but the cooktop has no display, when tripping repeats, when the isolator or switchboard smells hot, or when the problem started straight after installation or renovation work.
We check the circuit, isolator, terminations and protection, and confirm what the cooktop needs from its installation manual. Our Smeg induction cooktop installation page explains how we wire them.
Many induction cooktops switch off if something covers the controls, or if a zone is left on without a pan. Check the manual for the exact behaviour of your model.
If there's no display at all, it often is. Check the breaker and isolator first, then have the supply tested before booking an appliance repair.
Yes. Induction needs magnetic cookware of a suitable size. Test with a pan you know works.
We fix the electrical side. Faults inside the cooktop go through Smeg's service network.
Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and have the circuit tested, as it could be wiring or the cooktop.
