Smeg is known for appliances that look as good as they cook. If you've chosen a Smeg induction cooktop, we'll make sure the wiring behind it is up to the job.
Phone 0421 772 661 for a written quote. Let us know the model and whether you're replacing gas, ceramic or an older electric hob.
Smeg is an Italian brand with a strong design focus, and its induction cooktops come in a range of finishes and sizes to suit different kitchens. Whichever style you've picked, the electrical side is the same story as any induction hob: a dedicated circuit, sized to the appliance's rating, with proper protection at the switchboard.
We see plenty of Smeg cooktops going into renovated Federation cottages and terraces around the Inner West. These homes often have charm and character, and also older switchboards and wiring that were never designed for a high-power kitchen. Checking that first avoids a nasty surprise on installation day.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park. We install Smeg cooktops supplied by you or your kitchen company. We're not a Smeg dealer or service agent, so appliance faults and warranty claims go through Smeg.
Smeg's induction models vary in width, zone layout and features, with some offering bridgeable zones for long pans. Because the range runs from compact to wide, the power each model needs can differ quite a bit. Look up the installation manual for your exact model before buying: it lists the supply required and how the cooktop can be connected.
If you're replacing an existing cooktop, compare the new cut-out size with the old one. A slightly different hole can mean recutting stone or filling a gap, which is work for a benchtop installer. Also check the under-bench clearance if a drawer or oven sits below; Smeg's instructions spell out the ventilation it needs.
Sized to Smeg's rating and protected by its own breaker and RCD.
Rewireable fuses and old cabling are common in terraces. See old wiring in Inner West terraces.
We check how the cooktop fits alongside the oven, air conditioning and hot water so the main supply isn't overloaded.
Through the roof space, subfloor or wall cavity. Double-brick walls and tight terrace ceilings affect the route.
Cut-out and clearances are handled by your cabinetmaker or kitchen installer to Smeg's instructions.
We start with your switchboard. If it has room and the supply has enough capacity, we can add the new circuit straight away; if it's an old fuse board, we'll quote the upgrade separately so you can see both costs.
Next comes the cable run from the board to the kitchen. In single-storey cottages that's usually via the roof or subfloor; in terraces and units it can take more planning. We leave a proper connection point behind or under the cooktop.
With the benchtop cut and any gas capped by a licensed gasfitter, we connect the Smeg cooktop to its terminal block as the manual specifies, seat it in the bench and power it up zone by zone.
Finally we test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000 and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. We'll also run through which breaker controls the cooktop.
Often a connection or moisture issue, sometimes the appliance. See induction cooktop tripping the safety switch.
Many induction cooktops manage power between zones by design. If it seems excessive, the manual's power settings and the supply are worth checking.
Check the circuit breaker first. See induction cooktop has no power.
Older homes can run short of capacity once induction is added. A switchboard upgrade or careful load planning fixes it.
Detailed troubleshooting:
It's on the rating plate and in the installation manual. Send us the model and we'll confirm the circuit before we quote.
We do the electrical side. The gas must be capped by a licensed gasfitter, and any benchtop changes are done by your benchtop installer. We can work around their timing.
Not unless they have a magnetic base. Induction only heats cookware a magnet sticks to.
Not always. If your board has space for RCD-protected circuits and your supply has headroom, we can add the circuit. Old fuse boards usually need replacing.
