Smeg oven tripping the power?

Whether it's a built-in Smeg wall oven or a freestanding Smeg cooker, an oven that trips the power when it heats usually has one of two problems: leakage inside the appliance, or a fault in the circuit that feeds it.

The checks below help you tell the difference. If it keeps happening, phone 0421 772 661 for a licensed electrician.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Turn the oven off at the switchboard straight away if there's a bang, a burning smell, smoke or sparking inside the cavity. Keep the door closed and call 000 for fire. Never pour water on an electrical fire.

Don't move the oven out of its cabinet or remove any panels to investigate. Hard-wired connections are licensed work.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Breaker or safety switch?

At the switchboard, note exactly which device has dropped out. A safety switch points towards leakage; a breaker points towards overload or a short.

!

Reset once and watch

Reset it once. Note whether it trips straight away, during preheat, or only after the oven has been hot for a while.

!

Try one function at a time

If it holds, try a single function such as the top grill or the fan oven. If one specific function always causes the trip, tell your technician.

!

Let it dry out

If the oven was recently cleaned with lots of water or had a big spill, leave the door open and let it dry thoroughly before trying again.

!

Check for other appliances

If the safety switch protects other circuits too, unplug other kitchen appliances to see whether the tripping stops.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Element leakage. Like any electric oven, a Smeg oven's elements can develop leakage to earth as they age or absorb moisture. The safety switch picks this up and trips. Replacing elements is an appliance repair for Smeg's service network or a qualified appliance technician.

Supply wiring faults. A damaged cable behind the oven, a loose terminal at the isolator, or a connection that has overheated at the switchboard can cause tripping. We test these separately from the oven.

Circuit capacity. Freestanding cookers combine an oven and cooktop, and that combined load needs a suitably sized circuit. If a larger Smeg cooker replaced an older unit, the original circuit may not match. The installation manual sets out what's needed.

Combined leakage on a shared RCD. When the oven shares a safety switch with other kitchen appliances, their small normal leakages can add up. A dedicated RCBO for the oven makes nuisance trips less likely and faults easier to pin down.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Book an electrician if the oven trips the power more than once, if the breaker trips when you use the oven and cooktop together, or if there's heat marking around the isolator or outlet.

We test the circuit and protection, confirm the supply suits your Smeg oven, and tell you whether the fault is on our side or Smeg's. See our Smeg oven installation page for how these should be connected.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my Smeg oven trip the safety switch after preheating?

A failing element often only leaks once it's hot. Leave it off and have it tested.

My new Smeg oven tripped the power on first use. Is it faulty?

Not necessarily, but don't keep resetting it. Have the installation tested and contact the supplier or Smeg if the circuit checks out.

Can the cooktop and oven be on the same circuit?

Freestanding cookers often are, but the circuit must be sized for the combined load. Check the installation manual and have an electrician confirm it.

Do you repair Smeg ovens?

We repair the electrical supply and connections. Internal oven faults go through Smeg's service network.

Should I upgrade my switchboard?

Only if it's needed. Old switchboards without modern protection, or with no room for an RCBO, are worth reviewing.
