Smeg

Smeg Oven installation.

Smeg is an Italian brand known for its styling, from the rounded retro look to sleek modern glass. Its cooking range covers built-in wall and under-bench ovens, compact ovens, and freestanding cookers in several widths, including wide range-style cookers with more than one oven cavity.

Built-in and freestanding Smeg appliances are connected quite differently. A built-in oven lives inside joinery and may be plug-in or hard-wired depending on its rating. A freestanding electric or induction cooker combines oven and cooktop in one unit, draws the combined load of both, and is normally hard-wired to a dedicated circuit through a connection point on the wall behind it. Dual-fuel cookers add a gas connection, which is a licensed gasfitter's job.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We connect Smeg ovens and cookers across the Inner West and Sydney. We don't sell Smeg products and aren't a Smeg service agent; internal appliance faults are handled through Smeg's service network.

Know your model

Built-in, freestanding or dual fuel.

If you're replacing an old upright stove with a freestanding Smeg cooker, the existing cooker circuit may or may not be suitable. Older stove circuits were often sized for appliances with fewer elements, and the cable may have aged in the wall. An all-electric or induction cooker with a large oven can draw more than the cooker it replaces, so we check the rating plate against the circuit before connecting.

Dual-fuel models have a gas cooktop and electric oven. The electrical demand is lower than an all-electric cooker, because only the oven, lights, fan and ignition run on power, but it still needs the right circuit and connection. The gas side must be connected and tested by a licensed gasfitter; we can work around their schedule.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Connection point behind a freestanding cooker

Positioned where the manual specifies, so the cooker can be pushed back flush and the lead isn't pinched or sitting against hot surfaces.

!

Circuit sized for the full cooker

A freestanding electric cooker carries oven and cooktop together. Cable and protection are sized to that combined rating.

!

Isolation away from the heat

A cooker isolating switch should be reachable without moving the appliance, and not where you'd reach over hot burners to use it.

!

Safety switch protection

The cooking circuit should be RCD protected. Older boards without it may need a safety switch added.

!

Gasfitter for dual fuel

Gas connection, leak testing and compliance for the gas side is licensed gasfitting work, done separately from ours.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Check the cooker and the circuit. We compare the Smeg rating plate and manual with your existing circuit, cable and switchboard, and tell you upfront if anything needs upgrading.

2. Supply and isolation. We install or upgrade the circuit, fit the isolating switch in a safe, reachable spot and position the connection point for the appliance.

3. Connect. For freestanding cookers we connect the supply, check that any anti-tip bracket the manual calls for is fitted, and slide the cooker home. Built-in ovens are connected and secured into the cabinet.

4. Test and certify. We test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000, run each element and the oven, and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where new wiring is installed.

Common problems

Common Smeg problems.

!

Tripping power after installation

Can be the circuit, the connection or an element fault in the appliance. We test to find out which. See Smeg oven tripping power.

!

Old stove circuit too light

A new all-electric cooker on a circuit designed for an older, smaller stove can overload it. Upgrading the cable and breaker fixes it properly.

!

Cooker won't push back flush

An outlet or junction box in the wrong position behind the cooker. Relocating it to where the manual shows solves it.

!

No power to the oven at all

Check the isolator and switchboard first. Our guide to an oven with no power covers the safe checks.

Detailed troubleshooting:

Questions

Smeg Oven: common questions.

Does a freestanding Smeg cooker plug in?

All-electric and induction freestanding cookers are normally hard-wired to a dedicated circuit. Some dual-fuel models have a lower electrical demand; the manual says how each one connects.

Can you connect the gas on a dual-fuel Smeg?

No. Gas connection is done by a licensed gasfitter. We look after the electrical connection and can coordinate timing.

Will my old stove circuit work?

Maybe. We check its cable size, condition and protection against the new cooker's rating before connecting.

Can you install a Smeg oven I bought online?

Yes. We install and wire it; warranty and internal repairs are with Smeg's service network.

Are you licensed?

Yes. NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C, fully insured, with a Certificate of Compliance for the electrical work.
