Smeg rangehood installation

Smeg rangehoods are often bought to sit above a Smeg cooker, so the hood has to look right as well as work. We handle the electrical side: the power connection inside the canopy or cabinet, isolation and testing.

Ring 0421 772 661 for a written quote. A photo of the wall or cabinet above your cooktop, plus the hood's installation manual, is usually enough to start.

Smeg

Smeg Rangehood installation.

Smeg is an Italian appliance maker with a broad rangehood line-up: chimney-style canopies, undermount and integrated hoods that sit inside cabinetry, island hoods, and styles designed to match its retro and freestanding cookers. Whichever one you pick, the electrical need is similar: a safe, accessible supply in the right spot so the hood can be plugged in or wired, and the chimney cover or cabinet closed over neatly.

The detail that catches people out is position. In a chimney canopy the power point usually needs to sit inside the area the chimney cover will hide, and in an undermount the outlet normally goes in the cupboard above. If an old power point is in the wrong place, the cover won't sit flush or the plug ends up behind the motor housing.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install and wire rangehoods you've bought yourself, across the Inner West and Sydney. We are not a Smeg dealer or service agent; product warranty and internal faults go to Smeg's service network.

Know your model

Which Smeg hood, and where the power goes.

Wall canopies and island hoods have a chimney section that hides the power point and ducting, so we position the outlet within that zone. Island hoods hang from the ceiling, which means the supply comes down from the ceiling space and the structure above needs to carry the hood's weight. Undermount and integrated hoods disappear into cabinetry, and the outlet goes in the cupboard space where the plug can be reached once the cupboard is fitted.

Before you buy, check the installation manual for the electrical connection it expects (plug-in or hard-wired), the minimum height above your cooktop, and the cut-out or chimney dimensions. If you're pairing it with a new induction or electric cooktop, those height and clearance figures matter for the kitchen layout as much as for the wiring.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Outlet inside the hidden zone

A power point placed where the chimney cover or cupboard conceals it but you can still unplug the hood for servicing.

!

Circuit and protection

Rangehoods are a modest load and usually run off a general power circuit, but it needs to be RCD protected. Older kitchens may need a safety switch added.

!

Structure for island hoods

Ceiling-hung hoods need solid fixing to joists or added framing, and a cable run through the ceiling space.

!

Ducting by others

Ducting to the outside is a separate trade, usually your builder, cabinetmaker or a ventilation installer. We coordinate so the power doesn't clash with the duct path.

!

Clearance from heat

The outlet and cable should sit clear of the cooktop's heat and away from the duct outlet, following the manual.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Check the plan. We look at the hood model, the manual and where the canopy, cabinet and ducting will sit, then mark out the power point position before any cabinetry or splashback goes up.

2. Run the supply. We extend an existing circuit or run a new one, fit the outlet (or a hard-wired connection with isolation where the manual calls for it) and confirm RCD protection at the switchboard.

3. Connect and test. Once the hood is mounted and ducted, we connect it, check every fan speed and the built-in lighting, and test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000. Where new wiring is installed you receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

4. Real example. Our rangehood installation in Dulwich Hill shows the kind of tidy finish we aim for, with power hidden inside the cabinetry.

Common problems

Common Smeg problems.

!

Power point in the wrong spot

An old outlet behind the new canopy stops the cover sitting flat. Relocating it is a quick job if planned before the splashback goes on.

!

Hood dead after install

Often a tripped safety switch, a switched-off outlet inside the cupboard, or a plug not fully seated. See rangehood not working.

!

Lights work, fan doesn't

Usually points to the hood's control board or motor, which is a manufacturer service issue rather than house wiring.

!

Safety switch trips when used

Can be moisture, a damaged lead or an appliance fault. We test the circuit first to separate wiring from appliance.

Questions

Smeg Rangehood: common questions.

Can you install a Smeg rangehood I bought online?

Yes. Send us the model and a photo of the kitchen and we'll quote the electrical installation. Warranty on the hood itself is with Smeg.

Does a Smeg rangehood need its own circuit?

Usually not. Most rangehoods draw little power and run from a general power circuit, but check the manual. The circuit does need RCD protection.

Do you install the ducting too?

No. Ducting and roof or wall penetrations are done by your builder, cabinetmaker or a ventilation installer. We look after the power and connection.

Can the hood be hard-wired instead of plugged in?

If the manual allows it, yes, with a means of isolation. A plug and outlet is often simpler for servicing later.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Blue Link Electrical holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and is fully insured.
