Swann camera showing offline?

Swann sells both wired recorder kits and standalone Wi-Fi cameras, and the fix for an offline camera depends on which you have. Wired kits usually lose a camera through power or cabling; Wi-Fi cameras usually lose it through signal, power or the app.

Try the steps below first. If the camera's still offline, call 0421 772 661 and we'll find out whether it's the wiring, the power or the device.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

Any smell of burning, heat from a plugpack, water inside an outdoor power point or damaged cable means stop. Switch off at the main switch if you can do it safely and call us, or 000 in an emergency.

Avoid ladder work and don't open outdoor junction boxes or weatherproof outlets. If a camera is powered from an outdoor outlet, check the power at the switchboard instead.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Work out which type it is

Is the camera cabled back to a recorder, or does it connect over Wi-Fi on its own? Check your Swann Security app or the box the kit came in.

!

Recorder kits: check the recorder

Make sure the DVR or NVR is on at the power point and showing a picture on its monitor. If all cameras are missing, the recorder or its power is the likely culprit.

!

Wi-Fi cameras: check the signal

Cameras at the far end of a house or yard often sit on the edge of Wi-Fi range. If the router has moved or been replaced, the camera may not have rejoined the network.

!

Check plugpacks and outlets

Many Swann cameras run from a plugpack or a powered outlet. Check the plug is fully in and the power point is switched on. Test the outlet with a lamp if it's indoors.

!

Restart and check the app

Restart the recorder or camera by switching off at the plug and back on. Then check the app is up to date and you're logged in to the right account.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Weak Wi-Fi. Brick walls, double brick terraces, metal roofs and distance all weaken Wi-Fi. A camera that keeps dropping out at the back fence is often a coverage problem, not a faulty camera. A wired connection or better network coverage usually solves it.

Power supply faults. Plugpacks fail, extension leads get unplugged and outdoor outlets trip their safety switch in the rain. For recorder kits, a damaged power or video cable in the roof or along a fence takes one camera out.

Cabling damage. Pre-made kit cables are often run along the outside of walls or across roof spaces with little protection, and joints left exposed to weather corrode over time.

Camera, recorder or account faults. If power and signal are fine, the device may have failed or the app may need the camera re-added. That's a Swann support or warranty matter; we can confirm the electrical and cabling side is sound.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call us when an outdoor outlet keeps tripping, a camera loses power in wet weather, you'd like flaky Wi-Fi cameras replaced with properly cabled ones, or kit cables need to be run neatly and protected.

We can install proper weatherproof outlets, run network cable through walls and roof spaces, and test everything. See our Swann camera installation page for how we approach these systems.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my Swann Wi-Fi camera keep disconnecting?

Most often it's weak Wi-Fi at the camera's location. Moving the router, adding better network coverage or wiring the camera usually fixes it.

My Swann camera went offline after I got a new router. Why?

The camera is still looking for the old network. You'll need to reconnect it to the new Wi-Fi using the Swann app.

The outdoor power point for my camera keeps tripping. What should I do?

Leave it off and have it checked. Water in an outdoor outlet or cable is a common cause and needs a licensed electrician.

Can you hide the cables from my Swann kit?

Often, yes. We can run cable through roof spaces and wall cavities where the building allows, and fit tidy entry points at each camera.

Are you licensed for security cameras?

Yes, we hold NSW Security Licence S00014414 along with Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.
