Swann security camera installation

Swann is an Australian-founded brand best known for camera kits you can pick up from big retailers. Many people buy a kit, then find the hard part is getting cables through the roof and cameras mounted properly. That's where we come in.

Ring 0421 772 661 with the kit name from the box, and we'll quote to install it.

Swann

Swann Security camera installation.

Swann sells several kinds of system. There are wired kits with a recorder and cameras on cables, Wi-Fi cameras that connect to your home network, battery cameras, floodlight cameras and video doorbells. Each needs something different electrically, so the first step is working out exactly which type you have.

Wired kits come with pre-made cables in fixed lengths. They're designed for DIY, but long pre-terminated plugs don't always fit through small holes in ceilings and walls, and coiled spare cable in the roof isn't ideal. We often run fresh cable cut to length so the job is neater and more reliable. Wi-Fi models avoid cable runs but still need power and a good signal where they're mounted.

Blue Link Electrical, based in Hurlstone Park, installs Swann systems around the Inner West and Sydney. CCTV installation in NSW is licensed security work, and we hold NSW Security Licence S00014414 along with Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.

Know your model

Which Swann system do you have?

Look at the recorder label and the camera cables. Some Swann kits use a DVR with coaxial-style cables that carry video and power together; others use an NVR with network cables and PoE. They are not interchangeable, so if you're adding cameras, buy the same system type as your recorder. The manual or box will say which it is.

Wi-Fi and battery cameras, and Swann's video doorbells, connect through the Swann Security app instead of a cabled recorder. They're quicker to install but depend on your Wi-Fi reaching the camera, and battery models need recharging. If your Wi-Fi struggles outside, a cabled system or improving coverage first may save frustration. See our Wi-Fi dead spots guide.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Cable path for wired kits

A route from each camera to the recorder, usually through the roof space or under the floor, with protected runs outside.

!

Recorder spot

A ventilated, secure location with a power point and, for app viewing, a cable to the router.

!

Power for Wi-Fi cameras

Plug-in Wi-Fi cameras need a power source nearby. An outdoor-rated power point, installed by a licensed electrician, is neater than an extension lead.

!

Doorbell power

Battery doorbells just need fixing. Wired versions need the low-voltage supply specified in the manual, which we install safely.

!

Placement and privacy

Cover your doors, driveway and yard. NSW has surveillance laws, so angle cameras away from neighbours' windows and yards.

How it works

How we install it.

Check the kit. We confirm what you've bought, count cameras and cable lengths, and plan where everything goes. The quote notes if fresh cable is recommended.

Run and mount. Cables go through the roof, walls or underfloor, cameras are fixed to solid surfaces and every hole is sealed against weather and pests.

Connect and configure. We connect the recorder, set up recording and motion alerts, and link the Swann Security app to your phone. Wi-Fi cameras and doorbells are paired and checked for signal strength at their mounting spots.

Handover. We check every camera's view, show you playback, and explain recharging for any battery units. Our CCTV installation in Croydon is an example of our camera work.

Common problems

Common Swann problems.

!

Camera shows no video

On wired kits this is usually a loose or water-damaged connector, or a damaged cable along the run.

!

Wi-Fi camera keeps dropping

Weak signal at the camera location. Moving the router, adding an access point or choosing a wired camera fixes it.

!

Doorbell keeps restarting

On wired doorbells, the power supply may not match what the doorbell needs. It's checked against the manual's requirements.

!

Recorder beeping

Often a hard drive warning or a lost camera. The on-screen message or app usually tells you which.

Questions

Swann Security camera: common questions.

Can you install a Swann kit I bought from a store?

Yes. We install and wire customer-supplied kits. Warranty on the equipment stays with the retailer or Swann.

Should I use the cables that came in the box?

Sometimes they're fine. On longer or awkward runs, fresh cable cut to length is tidier and avoids big plugs that need large holes.

Do Wi-Fi cameras need an electrician?

Battery units can be DIY. Plug-in models may need an outdoor power point, which must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Can you add more cameras to my Swann system?

Usually, if the recorder has spare channels. They must be the same type (DVR or NVR) as your recorder.

Are you licensed for CCTV?

Yes. NSW Security Licence S00014414, plus Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C.
