Westinghouse ovens are found in a huge number of Sydney homes and rentals, so a Westinghouse oven tripping the power is a call we hear often. In most cases the fix is either a repair to the oven or a repair to its wiring, and testing tells you which.
Try the checks below, then call 0421 772 661 if the problem continues.
Burning smells, smoke, sparks in the oven or a bang when it trips are all reasons to leave it switched off at the switchboard. Keep the door shut and call 000 if there's fire.
If you're a tenant, report the fault to your agent or landlord before arranging repairs, and don't try to move or open the oven.
At the switchboard, note whether the safety switch, the oven breaker or the main switch went off. Take a photo for the electrician.
Switch it back on once. If it trips again when the oven heats, leave it off.
If it holds, try bake, grill and fan-forced separately. A trip on one function only is useful information for whoever repairs it.
If the trip started after a deep clean or a spill, open the door and let the oven dry out fully before trying again.
If the kitchen shares a safety switch, unplug the kettle, microwave and other appliances to rule them out.
Heating element breakdown. The most common cause of an oven tripping a safety switch. The element's internal insulation degrades and current leaks to earth, often once it heats. It's an appliance repair for Westinghouse's service network or an appliance technician.
Supply cable or connection faults. A cable damaged when the oven was installed, a loose terminal at the isolator, or a burnt connection at the switchboard. We test the circuit up to the oven's connection to rule these in or out.
Old switchboard protection. Older Inner West switchboards may have ageing safety switches that are more prone to nuisance tripping, or may group the kitchen circuits on one RCD. Reviewing the board can make tripping less disruptive.
Overload. If it's the oven's breaker rather than the safety switch, the circuit may be undersized for the oven, or a connection may be overheating. That needs an electrician.
Call us if the oven trips anything more than once, if it happens with the oven and cooktop on together, or if you can see heat marks on a switch or outlet. Landlords and agents can book the test directly.
We'll test the circuit separately to the appliance and give you a clear result. If the wiring is fine, you'll know to send an appliance technician. See our Westinghouse oven installation page for how they're wired.
The grill element may be failing. That's an appliance repair. We can test the supply first to make sure it isn't the wiring.
No. The safety switch is detecting current leaking where it shouldn't. Leave it off until it's tested.
An electrician to test the supply first, then an appliance technician if the oven itself is at fault.
Yes. Newer protection can be more sensitive to leakage that older equipment didn't pick up. The leakage still needs fixing.
We repair the supply side. Internal repairs go to Westinghouse's service network.
