As well as ceiling fans, Fanco makes exhaust fans for bathrooms, laundries and toilets. We install and wire them in homes across the Inner West and Sydney.

Fanco

Fanco Exhaust fan installation.

An exhaust fan is a simple, inexpensive way to protect a bathroom. Without one, steam sits on the ceiling and walls, paint peels and mould grows in corners. Many older Inner West bathrooms either have no fan at all or a small one that blows into the roof space and does very little.

Most Fanco exhaust fans are ceiling-mounted. The electrical side is usually simple: a supply from the lighting circuit and a switch, often shared with the light. The part that decides how well it works is where the air goes once it leaves the fan.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install Fanco exhaust fans you've bought and test them before we leave. We're independent of Fanco; warranty on the fan is the manufacturer's. Looking for a ceiling fan instead? See Fanco ceiling fan installation.

Know your model

Into the roof, or out of the house?

A fan that discharges into the roof space moves moist air out of the room, but that air then has to go somewhere. In a well-ventilated roof it may disperse; in a tight or insulated roof it can condense on timbers, sarking and insulation. Ducting the fan to an outside vent, through the eave, a wall or a roof cowl, is generally the better choice. Check whether your chosen model has a spigot sized for ducting, and plan the route before installation.

On switching: sharing the light switch is simple, but the fan stops the moment you leave. A separate switch gives you more control, and a timer or humidity-sensing option, where the model supports it, keeps the fan running until the steam has cleared. Check what features and wiring your model needs; the installation manual lays out the connections.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Supply and switch

Usually from the lighting circuit, on the light switch or a separate switch.

!

Ducting route

A duct to an outside vent where practical, kept short and smooth for good airflow.

!

RCD protection

The bathroom or laundry circuit must be protected by a safety switch.

!

Ceiling opening

A neat cut-out between joists, sized to the fan's installation template.

!

Wet-area rules

The fan and its switch positioned to meet AS/NZS 3000 bathroom zones.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Inspect. We check the ceiling, roof space access, duct route and the lighting circuit, then quote in writing.

2. Cut and cable. We cut the ceiling opening between joists and run the supply and switch cabling.

3. Fit and duct. The fan is mounted and connected to Fanco's instructions, with the duct fitted to the outlet and run to the vent where included.

4. Test. We confirm airflow and switching, test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000, and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

Common problems

Common Fanco problems.

!

Fan not running

Switch, supply or motor. See bathroom exhaust fan not working.

!

Tripping

Often moisture in the fan or connections. See exhaust fan tripping the safety switch.

!

Mould despite a fan

The fan may be too small, not ducted, or switched off too soon.

!

Rattling

Loose grille or mounting, or a worn motor needing replacement.

Questions

Fanco Exhaust fan: common questions.

Can you add an exhaust fan where there isn't one?

Yes, if there's access above the ceiling to fit the fan and run cable. We'll check the roof space first.

Should the fan be on the light switch?

It can be, but a separate switch or a timer gives better control and clears steam more effectively.

Is ducting outside really needed?

It's generally the better choice. Air left in the roof space can cause condensation, especially in tightly sealed or insulated roofs.

Can you replace my old exhaust fan?

Yes. If the new fan's cut-out is a different size, we adapt or patch the ceiling.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Blue Link Electrical holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and is fully insured.
