Heat pump incentives: the electrical side

NSW and federal programs have offered incentives for replacing gas or old electric hot water with a heat pump. The discount usually covers the unit and standard installation, but the electrical work your home actually needs can be a different story.

Ring 0421 772 661 if you've been quoted for a heat pump and want the electrical side checked or done properly.

Incentives in general

How these programs tend to work.

Incentives for heat pump hot water have generally been delivered through participating providers, who apply the discount to their quote. Eligibility, conditions and amounts change, and they depend on things like the system being replaced and the product installed. We don't quote incentive amounts or dates, and Blue Link is not a provider under any of these programs.

Before you commit, check current eligibility on official NSW Government and Australian Government energy websites, and confirm with your provider exactly what their quote includes.

What can be missing

Where the electrical work gets complicated.

A straight swap from an electric storage tank to a heat pump in the same position is usually simple electrically: there's already a circuit, though it may need checking for size and protection. A swap from gas is different. Gas heaters usually have no hot water circuit at all, so a new one has to be run from the switchboard to the outdoor unit.

We often see quotes that assume an existing circuit, then the installer finds there isn't one, or that the switchboard has no space. Asking these questions upfront avoids surprises on the day.

!

Is there an existing circuit?

If you're replacing gas, probably not. A new circuit and outdoor isolator will be needed.

!

Is the switchboard suitable?

Ceramic fuses or a full board may mean a switchboard upgrade first.

!

Is the cable route long?

Side passages and rear courtyards can be a long way from the board, which affects cable size and labour.

!

Controlled load or continuous?

Some heat pumps can run on an off-peak or timed circuit, others need a continuous supply. Check the manual and your retailer.

!

Who issues the CCEW?

Whoever does the electrical work must provide the compliance certificate.

Our role

What we can do.

We do the electrical side of heat pump installations: new or upgraded circuits, outdoor isolators, switchboard work, testing to AS/NZS 3000 and the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. We can do that alongside the plumber who installs the unit, whether you've arranged the heat pump yourself or through a provider. Gas disconnection is always a licensed gasfitter's job.

If your heat pump provider has their own electrician, we're also happy to do preparatory work such as a switchboard upgrade before they arrive. Our guides to heat pump hot water electrical needs and switching from gas to a heat pump go into more detail.

Choosing a unit

Think beyond the discount.

A heavily discounted unit isn't automatically the right one. Noise level, recovery time, tank size for your household and where it physically fits all matter for the next decade or more. Our heat pump vs electric hot water comparison and brand pages, such as Rheem and Stiebel Eltron, may help you compare.

Questions

Common questions.

Are you an approved provider for heat pump incentives?

No. We're a licensed electrician and do the electrical work. Check current eligibility and participating providers on official government sites.

How much is the NSW heat pump discount?

We don't quote amounts, because programs change. Check current details on the official NSW Government energy website.

Does the incentive cover the electrical work?

It depends on the provider and program. Ask your provider exactly what electrical work their quote includes.

I'm replacing gas. Will I need a new circuit?

Almost certainly. Gas water heaters don't normally have a dedicated hot water circuit.

Can you work with my heat pump provider's plumber?

Yes. We can run the circuit before or on the day, and test and certify the electrical work.
