Stiebel Eltron is a German manufacturer of water heating and heat pump products. Its integrated heat pump water heaters, with the heat pump sitting on top of the tank, are a common choice for replacing an old electric hot water system.
Ring 0421 772 661 for the electrical quote. A photo of the old unit's rating plate and your switchboard is a good start.
An integrated (all-in-one) heat pump like Stiebel Eltron's has the compressor, fan and evaporator built into the top of the storage tank. That means one unit to place, one set of plumbing connections, and one supply circuit, so it can often go close to where an existing electric storage heater stood.
Integrated units suit households that want a simpler swap and have room for a slightly taller unit with airflow around the top. They're a natural replacement for an electric storage heater that's reached the end of its life, and they cut the electricity used for water heating compared with a conventional element.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We check and install the electrical supply, isolation and protection and certify the work. A licensed plumber installs the unit's water connections and valves.
Stiebel Eltron's range includes integrated heat pumps in different capacities. Some heat pump water heaters include a backup electric element for cold spells or high demand, which affects the circuit they need. The installation manual and rating plate tell you the supply requirements, and we install to those rather than assuming the old circuit is right.
Because the heat pump is on top of the tank, the whole unit needs to be outdoors or in a well-ventilated space with clearances to let air in and out. A tight laundry cupboard that suited an old electric heater may not suit a heat pump. Also consider noise if the unit will sit near bedrooms.
A dedicated circuit sized for the unit, including any backup element, with RCD or RCBO protection.
A switch beside the unit so it can be safely isolated for servicing.
Outdoors or in a large, well-ventilated space, with the clearances the manual specifies.
Away from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbours'. A daytime timer helps.
Can be connected to an off-peak controlled-load circuit or a general circuit with a timer, depending on the unit and your plan.
Older boards without safety switches may need an upgrade. See RCD vs RCBO.
1. Assess. We check the existing hot water circuit and how it's supplied (general or controlled load), the switchboard and the proposed location. You get a written quote.
2. Prepare the circuit. If the existing circuit isn't suitable, we upgrade the cable and protection. We fit a local isolator at the unit position.
3. Connect. After the plumber installs and fills the unit, we make the electrical connection to the manufacturer's instructions. Powering an empty tank can damage the element, so the order matters.
4. Test and certify. Testing to AS/NZS 3000 and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. NSW energy-saving incentives may be available for heat pumps; check current eligibility. Our heat pump guide has more.
Moisture, a damaged cable or an internal fault. See heat pump tripping the safety switch.
Limited run hours on controlled load, or a unit undersized for the household. Settings or the tariff arrangement may help.
Poor airflow cuts performance. Relocating may be the only real fix.
Check the manual. If the supply is fine, it's for the manufacturer's service network.
Often, if the spot has enough airflow and space. Enclosed cupboards are usually a problem.
Sometimes. We check its rating and condition against Stiebel Eltron's requirements.
A separately metered circuit that the network switches on during set periods, usually overnight, at a lower rate on many plans. Heat pumps can often use one, but check the manufacturer's guidance.
NSW energy-saving incentives may be available for heat pump water heaters. Check current eligibility before you buy.
A licensed plumber. We do the electrical side and can coordinate timing.
