Power point relocation

Plenty of power points are simply in the wrong place: hidden behind a wardrobe, stranded on the wrong side of the room after a furniture change, or sitting exactly where the new TV bracket needs to go. Moving one is a common job and usually tidier than living with powerboards.

Ring 0421 772 661 and tell us where the outlet is now and where you want it. Photos of both walls help us quote accurately.

What's involved

Moving an outlet the right way

Relocating a power point means disconnecting it, extending or re-routing the cable to the new position, and dealing properly with the old spot. That last part matters. We don't bury a cable joint inside a sealed wall where nobody can find or inspect it. Depending on the layout, the old position either becomes a blank plate over an accessible junction, or the cable is pulled back and re-run so the old hole can be patched.

Sometimes it's simpler to leave the original outlet where it is and add a new one in the right place. We'll tell you which approach is cleaner for your wall and your budget. If you're adding outlets rather than moving them, our power point installation page covers that work.

Common requests

Why people move power points

The reasons are usually practical, and most can be sorted in a single visit.

!

Behind the TV

Lifting an outlet up behind a wall-mounted TV so cords disappear. Often paired with a data or antenna point; see TV and audio installation.

!

Bedside

Moving outlets from behind the bed head to either side of it, sometimes swapping to USB power points while we're there.

!

Kitchen benches

Shifting points that sit too close to a sink or cooktop, or that ended up behind an appliance after a layout change.

!

Home office

Bringing power to desk height so monitors and chargers don't need a tangle of leads on the floor.

!

Furniture and joinery

Relocating outlets that a new built-in wardrobe, bookshelf or vanity would otherwise cover.

!

Skirting-level to wall

Moving outlets up from very low positions in older homes where they're awkward to reach.

Price factors

What affects the quote

Wall construction is the main variable. Moving an outlet sideways along a plasterboard wall with an open cavity is quick. Solid double brick, common in Inner West terraces and Federation houses, has to be chased to bury the cable, which takes longer and leaves plaster to make good. Lath and plaster walls are fragile and need careful cutting.

Distance and direction matter too: moving up the same stud cavity is easier than crossing a doorway or a chimney breast. Access from the roof space or subfloor can make a long run simpler. We do the electrical work and leave the wall neat and safe; patching and painting larger chases is usually a job for your plasterer or painter, and we'll say so in the quote. More detail is in our power point cost guide.

How we work

From quote to tested outlet

We confirm which circuit the outlet is on, check its condition and whether it has safety switch protection, then agree the new position with you before cutting anything. Moving outlets is a good chance to spot old cable or loose connections; if an existing point already feels wobbly or warm, read loose power point first.

After the relocation every affected outlet is tested for polarity, earth continuity and insulation, and we confirm the safety switch operates. Where the work calls for it we lodge a CCEW and send it to you.

Questions

Common questions.

Can a power point be moved without damaging the wall?

In plasterboard walls, usually with only small cut-outs that are easy to patch. Brick and lath and plaster walls mean more making good. We'll explain what to expect before we start.

Is it cheaper to add a new outlet than move the old one?

Sometimes. If the old outlet is still useful where it is, adding a second point can be the simpler job. We'll quote both if it's close.

Can you move a power point in a rental?

Yes, with the owner's or agent's approval. We provide a written invoice and compliance paperwork that landlords and property managers can keep on file.

Can I turn a double outlet into a USB outlet while it's being moved?

Yes. Swapping the faceplate to a USB combination outlet at the same time is common and adds very little work.

Will moving an outlet affect my safety switch?

The outlet stays on its existing circuit. If that circuit has no safety switch protection, we'll recommend adding it.
