A power point with built-in USB charging tidies up bedsides, benches and desks, and frees the sockets for things that actually need them. Most can go in where an existing power point already sits.
Ring 0421 772 661 and tell us how many you'd like and where. We're a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, installing them across the Inner West and Sydney.
In most cases a USB power point is a direct replacement for an existing double power point. We isolate the circuit, remove the old outlet, check the wiring and wall box, then fit the new outlet with its USB module. The USB charger electronics sit behind the face plate, so they take up more depth than a standard outlet. In shallow or crowded wall cavities, or on brick walls with surface-mounted boxes, we check the fit before committing.
Where you want USB charging somewhere without an existing outlet, such as a new bedside position or a kitchen island, it becomes a new power point installation with a cable run. Our power point installation page covers that work.
Not all USB outlets charge equally. The things worth checking are the type of ports, the total charging output, and how that output is shared when more than one device is plugged in. If you're comparing in-wall outlets with plug-in adaptors, we've written a separate comparison: USB power points vs adaptors.
USB-C suits most current phones, tablets and many laptops. Combined A and C outlets cover older cables too.
Higher-output outlets charge faster and can suit some laptops. Check the rating against your devices.
With two devices plugged in, output is often split. Read the specifications rather than the headline number.
Many switch and outlet ranges offer a USB version, so new outlets can match existing ones.
Fixed outlets must be suitable for Australian use. Avoid unbranded imports bought online.
USB modules draw a small amount of power continuously; a factor on outlets that are rarely used.
Bedsides are the obvious one: a phone, a watch and a lamp from one outlet without a tangle of chargers. Kitchen benches near where people sit or prep, so phones and tablets don't end up next to the sink. Home offices and study nooks, where desks attract cables; see our home office electrician page if you're setting up a dedicated workspace. Living rooms beside the couch, and kids' rooms where fewer loose chargers is safer.
For rentals, Airbnb-style short stays and offices, USB outlets are a small upgrade guests and staff notice. In older Inner West homes with few power points per room, it's a sensible way to get more use from each outlet without adding new circuits, although it doesn't solve a genuine shortage of outlets.
Each outlet is tested after installation: correct polarity, earth continuity and safety switch protection on the circuit. Opening up an old outlet sometimes reveals a loose connection, heat damage or brittle cable. If so, we'll show you before fitting a new outlet to wiring that needs attention, and in older homes it's worth confirming the circuit has RCD protection; see safety switch rules in NSW.
Cost depends on how many outlets you're replacing, whether you supply them or we source them for you, whether any are new positions needing cable runs, and the condition of the existing wiring. Doing several in one visit is the most efficient approach. For general pricing factors, see our power point installation cost guide.
Usually yes, as long as the wall box has enough depth for the USB module. We check before fitting.
Some higher-output USB-C outlets can charge certain laptops. Check the outlet's rated output against your laptop's charging requirements.
No. Replacing a power point is fixed wiring work, which must be done by a licensed electrician in NSW.
Reputable outlets suitable for Australian use, installed by a licensed electrician on a protected circuit, are as safe as a standard power point.
Most USB power points are doubles with USB ports added, so you keep both sockets.
