Westinghouse rangehood installation

Westinghouse hoods turn up in a lot of rentals, apartments and practical family kitchens. Many of our rangehood jobs are swaps: an old hood out, a new one in, with the power checked and brought up to standard.

Call 0421 772 661 for a written quote. Tell us the new model and send a photo of the old hood and the cupboard above it.

Westinghouse

Westinghouse Rangehood installation.

Westinghouse is one of the most familiar appliance names in Australia, and its rangehoods cover the everyday end of the market: undermount hoods that fit beneath a cupboard, slide-out (telescopic) hoods, and wall canopies. They're a common pick for landlords and for replacing a tired hood without redoing the kitchen.

The electrical side of a swap looks simple, but older kitchens throw up surprises. We sometimes find hoods wired straight into a cable with no isolation, outlets with heat damage above the cooktop, or kitchen circuits with no safety switch at all. A replacement is a good time to fix those.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (Licence 332956C), working across the Inner West and Sydney. We install and connect Westinghouse hoods you or your agent have bought. We aren't a Westinghouse service agent; appliance faults go through the manufacturer.

Swapping like for like, or changing type.

Replacing an undermount with another undermount of similar width is the easiest case: the outlet in the cupboard above is often already in the right place. Changing from an undermount to a slide-out, or to a wall canopy, usually means moving the outlet, because a canopy hides its connection inside the chimney cover rather than in a cupboard.

Check the new hood's width against the cabinet opening, and the manual for its connection type and minimum height above the cooktop. Gas cooktops typically call for more clearance than electric ones, so going from one to the other can change where the hood can sit. Any gas work is done by a licensed gasfitter, not us.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

A safe outlet

An outlet in the cupboard or chimney zone, clear of heat, with no scorching or loose fit. Old damaged outlets get replaced.

!

Isolation

Old hoods that were hard-wired with no switch get a proper outlet or isolator so the new hood can be turned off.

!

Safety switch

If the kitchen circuit has no RCD, we recommend adding one. Rentals in particular benefit; see landlord electrical work.

!

Duct connection

Recirculating hoods need no duct. Ducted hoods connect to existing ducting; new ducting is a separate trade.

!

Disposal of the old hood

Let us know at booking if you'd like the old hood taken away.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Isolate and remove. We switch off the circuit, disconnect the old hood and check the condition of the outlet or wiring behind it.

2. Fix the supply. If the outlet is damaged, poorly placed or missing, we replace or relocate it. If there's no RCD on the circuit, we'll quote one.

3. Connect and test. We connect the new hood, check fan speeds and lighting, and test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000. Where new wiring is done, you get a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

4. For landlords. We can liaise with tenants or agents for access. Our Dulwich Hill rangehood installation shows a typical result.

Common problems

Common Westinghouse problems.

!

Old hood hard-wired with no isolation

Common in older kitchens. We add an outlet or isolator so the new hood can be safely switched off.

!

Heat-damaged outlet

Outlets too close to the cooktop can discolour or loosen. We replace and reposition them.

!

Hood won't run

Check the switchboard and the outlet switch first. See rangehood not working.

!

Breaker trips with the oven on

Points to an overloaded or shared circuit. We trace the circuits and separate the loads where needed.

Questions

Westinghouse Rangehood: common questions.

Can you swap my old rangehood for a Westinghouse?

Yes. We remove the old one, check the power and connect the new hood. Ducting changes are by others.

My old hood was wired straight in. Is that a problem?

It means there's no easy way to isolate it. We'll fit an outlet or isolator as part of the swap.

Do you work for landlords and agents?

Yes. We quote in writing and can arrange access with tenants.

Will the new hood need a new circuit?

Rarely. It usually runs from the existing kitchen power circuit, which should have RCD protection.

Are you a Westinghouse service agent?

No. We're a licensed electrician (332956C). Faults inside the hood are handled under the manufacturer's warranty.
