Zappi not charging?

A Zappi that won't charge is usually down to its charging mode, the solar reading, or the power supply to the charger. Some simple checks often find the cause.

If the checks below don't solve it, ring 0421 772 661 and we'll test the circuit and the installation.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

If you notice a burning smell, scorch marks, a damaged cable or water around the charger or switchboard, don't touch it. Turn off the power at the main switch if it's safe to do so and call an electrician. Call 000 if there's fire or anyone has had a shock.

Never open the charger or the switchboard cover. Everything below can be done without removing any covers.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Check the charging mode

In solar-only mode the Zappi waits for surplus solar. On a cloudy day or in the evening it may not start. Try a mode that allows grid power to see if it charges.

!

Check the switchboard

Look for a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker labelled for the charger or garage. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.

!

Check the car

Some cars have their own charging schedule or charge limit set in the car or its app, which can stop charging even when the charger is ready.

!

Check the cable connection

Unplug and firmly reconnect the charging cable at both ends, and make sure the car's charge port is unlocked.

!

Check for a power outage

If other things in the house are off too, check Ausgrid's outage information or call Ausgrid on 13 13 88.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Solar mode with no surplus. This is the most common reason. The charger is doing exactly what it's set to do: waiting for enough spare solar. Check the mode and the minimum green level settings in the app.

CT clamp problems. The Zappi relies on CT clamps to measure power to and from the grid. If a clamp has moved, is on the wrong cable or is reading in the wrong direction, the charger can think there's no surplus, or behave strangely. This needs an electrician to check at the switchboard or meter box.

Supply or protection tripping. A safety switch or breaker on the charger circuit may have tripped because of a fault in the wiring, the charger or the car. Repeated tripping should always be tested, not reset over and over.

Charger or car fault. If the supply is fine and the settings are right, the fault may be in the charger itself or the car. Charger faults are covered by myenergi's support and warranty process; we can confirm the supply side is sound first.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

Call a licensed electrician if the safety switch or breaker keeps tripping, if the charger has no power at all while the rest of the house is fine, if solar mode never works even on sunny days (often a CT clamp issue), or if you see any heat damage.

We test the circuit, protection and CT clamp setup, and tell you plainly whether it's an installation issue we can fix or a product issue for the manufacturer. See our Zappi installation page for how the charger should be set up.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my Zappi only charge on sunny days?

It's probably in a solar-only mode, which waits for surplus solar. Switch to a mode that allows grid power if you need the car charged regardless.

My Zappi says it's waiting. What does that mean?

Usually that it's ready but waiting for surplus solar, a schedule, or the car to request charge. Check the mode, schedules in the app and the car's own settings.

Can a moved CT clamp stop charging?

Yes. If the clamp isn't measuring the grid connection correctly, solar charging won't work properly. An electrician should check and reposition it.

The safety switch trips when I start charging. Is that dangerous?

It means the protection detected a problem. Leave the circuit off and have it tested. It may be the wiring, the charger or the car.

Do you fix Zappi chargers?

We fix the electrical side: circuit, protection, CT clamps and connections. Faults inside the charger go through the manufacturer's warranty and support.
