Zappi tripping the safety switch?

A safety switch that drops out when your Zappi starts charging is telling you something: it has measured current leaking to earth, or a fault on the circuit, and has cut power in a fraction of a second. That's exactly what it's there for.

Finding which part is leaking (the wiring, the charger or the car) takes testing. Ring 0421 772 661 and we'll track it down.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

A tripping safety switch is a warning, not an inconvenience. Don't tape, hold or bypass it, and don't keep flicking it back on. If there's a smell of burning, scorching on the charger or switchboard, or water around the unit, switch off at the main switch if safe and keep clear. Call 000 for fire or injury.

Leave the Zappi's cover and the switchboard cover on. The checks below are all done from the outside.

Quick checks

Safe things you can check yourself.

!

Note when it trips

Does it trip the moment you plug in, when charging begins, partway through, or only in wet weather? That timing is the most useful thing you can tell an electrician.

!

Reset once only

Switch the safety switch back on one time. If it trips again during the next charge, leave the charger circuit off until it's tested.

!

Check other circuits

If the same safety switch protects other circuits, unplug other appliances on them. Sometimes the Zappi just tips an already-leaky circuit over the limit.

!

Look for water

Outdoor chargers, carports and driveways get weather. Look for water pooling at the cable entry, a cracked conduit or a lead lying in a puddle.

!

Try another car if you can

If a second EV charges without tripping, the first car may be the source. Don't swap leads or adaptors that aren't designed for it.

Causes

What usually causes it.

Moisture in the installation. Water getting into a junction, conduit, isolator or the cable entry is a common cause of earth leakage, and it often shows up after rain. This is electrical work: finding the entry point and sealing or replacing the affected part.

Wrong type of protection. EV chargers need RCD protection suited to the kind of leakage current they can produce. The Zappi has its own DC leakage detection, but the protection at the switchboard still has to be the right type and rating for the circuit. An unsuitable or ageing RCD can trip when it shouldn't, or not trip when it should. We check what's fitted against the manufacturer's instructions.

Shared protection. When the charger shares a safety switch with other circuits, small leakages add up. A dedicated RCBO for the charger is often the cleaner fix, and it stops a charger fault from blacking out half the house.

Charger or car faults. If the wiring and protection test fine, the leakage may be inside the Zappi or in the car's charging system. Charger faults go through myenergi's support and warranty; car faults go to the dealer. We can give you the test results to take to them.

When to call

When it needs an electrician.

If the safety switch trips more than once, or trips during wet weather, have it tested before you charge again. The same applies if tripping started after other work at the switchboard, or after storm damage.

We insulation-test the circuit, check the RCD's type and trip performance, inspect the outdoor parts for water and confirm the supply is sound. Our Zappi installation page covers how the circuit should be set up.

Questions

Common questions

Why does my safety switch trip only when the Zappi is charging?

Charging is a heavy, continuous load, so any leakage in the charger, the car or the wiring shows up then. Testing each part separately finds which one it is.

Does a Zappi need its own safety switch?

It needs suitable RCD protection, and a dedicated RCBO is usually the neatest way to provide it. The type required depends on the charger and its instructions.

It only trips after rain. What does that mean?

Almost always moisture getting into something outdoors: a junction, conduit, isolator or the charger's cable entry. Leave it off and get it checked.

Can I swap the safety switch for a less sensitive one?

No. RCD ratings are set for safety, and changing them must be done by a licensed electrician to suit the installation, not to stop nuisance tripping.

Will my warranty cover it?

If the fault is inside the Zappi, myenergi's warranty process applies. Installation faults, like water ingress or loose wiring, are electrical repairs.
