Ajax alarm system installation

Ajax is known mainly for wireless alarms run from a central hub and a well-designed app. It's a good match for apartments, renovated homes you don't want to cut into, and people who like managing things from their phone.

Ajax

Ajax Alarm system installation.

An Ajax system looks quite different from a traditional alarm. Instead of a metal panel box in a cupboard, there's a compact hub, and the detectors, door contacts, keypads and sirens connect to it wirelessly. Setup, arming and notifications all happen through the Ajax app.

Because there's little or no cabling to detectors, Ajax suits finished interiors: freshly painted terraces, apartments with concrete ceilings and homes where the roof space is inaccessible. The trade-off is battery-powered devices, which need replacing every so often, and a hub that needs good placement for coverage.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, holding NSW Security Licence S00014414 and Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C. We plan, install and commission Ajax systems across the Inner West and Sydney.

Know your model

Getting an Ajax system right.

Ajax hubs come in versions with different communication options, such as Ethernet, mobile and Wi-Fi, and different device capacities. For reliability, a hub with more than one way to reach the internet is worth considering, so notifications still get through if your broadband drops. Check each hub's specifications against the number of devices you plan to use.

Ajax also offers wired-device options for installers who want them, but most homes choose the wireless range. Whatever you buy, the location of the hub matters most: central, out of sight, away from large metal objects and close to a power point and network connection.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Hub power

The hub plugs into mains power and has a built-in backup battery for outages. A power point in the right central spot may need adding.

!

Network cable

An Ethernet connection to the hub is more dependable than Wi-Fi. We can run a data cable if there isn't one; see Ethernet cabling.

!

Radio coverage

Large or multi-level houses with thick brick walls may need a range extender. We test signal at each device location before fixing.

!

Device batteries

Detectors, contacts and sirens run on batteries. The app warns you as they get low.

!

Keypad by the door

Optional, but handy for family members who don't want to use the app every time.

!

Strata and siren placement

Apartment by-laws may limit external sirens or drilling. An indoor siren is often a sensible alternative.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Plan the coverage. We mark detector positions, decide whether you need a range extender, and choose a hub location with power and a network connection. You get a written quote.

2. Power and data. If needed, we add a power point or data point at the hub location, so it isn't relying on a power board behind the TV.

3. Mount and pair. Devices are paired with the hub, signal-tested in place, then fixed. Detectors are aimed to avoid heaters, windows and pets.

4. Configure and hand over. We set up groups, night mode, users and notifications in the app, test every device and the siren, and show you around the app. Our alarm guide covers the broader choices.

Common problems

Common Ajax problems.

!

Hub losing connection

Usually Wi-Fi at the edge of range or a router change. A cabled connection or mobile backup is the fix.

!

Device out of range

Thick walls, new mirrors or metal shelving can weaken signal. Moving the device or adding a range extender helps.

!

Hub on battery

The power point or circuit feeding the hub has lost power. Check the switchboard; see alarm panel no power.

!

Notifications not arriving

Often phone settings or app permissions rather than the system itself. We check both sides.

Questions

Ajax Alarm system: common questions.

Can I install Ajax myself?

Ajax is designed to be straightforward, but NSW treats alarm installation for others as licensed security work, and good placement makes a big difference. We hold Security Licence S00014414.

Is an Ajax alarm suitable for an apartment?

Yes, it's a common choice because it needs little drilling. Check your strata by-laws about external sirens.

What happens in a blackout?

The hub switches to its backup battery and devices keep running on their own batteries. How long it lasts depends on the hub and how it's connected.

Do you offer monitoring?

No. Ajax can send notifications to your phone, and monitoring companies offer professional monitoring as a separate service.

What licences do you hold?

NSW Security Licence S00014414 and Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C. We're fully insured.
