If an appliance doesn't come with a plug, it has to be connected by a licensed electrician. That covers most ovens and cooktops, electric hot water, many heaters and fans, and a long list of fixed equipment around the home.
Ring 0421 772 661 with the make and model, or send a photo of the rating plate. We're a licensed electrician in Hurlstone Park connecting appliances across the Inner West and Sydney.
Appliances that draw more current than a standard power point is designed for, or that are built into the structure of the house, are generally designed to be wired directly to their own circuit. The installation manual will say so, and it will usually specify the circuit rating, cable size and type of isolation needed.
Hardwiring isn't just joining a few wires. The supply circuit has to be rated for the load, protected correctly at the switchboard, fitted with an isolator where needed, and terminated to the manufacturer's instructions. Getting any of that wrong can void a warranty and, worse, create a fire or shock risk.
Wall ovens, freestanding cookers, induction and ceramic cooktops. See oven and cooktop installation.
Electric storage and heat pump units on their own circuit. See hot water electrical work.
Many plug in, but some are hardwired or need an outlet placed inside the cabinetry.
Wall panel heaters, bathroom heat lamps, exhaust fans and ceiling fans.
Pumps, heaters and controllers. Requirements are in our pool and spa electrical guide.
Supply to motors, plus outdoor-rated outlets and isolators.
The most useful thing you can do is send us the model numbers before the appliance arrives. From the specifications we can see what circuit it needs and compare that with what's already in the house. A new oven replacing an old one of a similar rating is often straightforward. A large induction cooktop replacing a gas cooktop is a new circuit, and possibly more.
We also look at the switchboard. Older boards with ceramic fuses or no spare space may not be able to take a new circuit, and the total load of the house matters too: adding several big electric appliances at once can push a single-phase supply close to its limit. Our dedicated circuit installation page explains what a new circuit involves.
Where an existing circuit is suitable, we isolate it, remove the old appliance connection, and connect the new one to the manufacturer's instructions. Where a new circuit is needed, we run cable from the switchboard, fit protection (often an RCBO), install any isolator required, and terminate at the appliance.
Everything is tested to AS/NZS 3000 before the appliance is switched on: polarity, earth continuity, insulation resistance and RCD operation. We then confirm the appliance powers up and runs, and lodge a CCEW where the work requires it.
Gas connections are done by a licensed gasfitter and refrigerant work by a licensed refrigeration technician. Plumbing for hot water or dishwashers is for your plumber. We coordinate timing so the electrical connection happens once the other trades are ready.
A like-for-like swap on a sound existing circuit is the simplest job. Costs rise when a new circuit is needed, when the cable route is long or awkward, when the switchboard needs work, or when the existing wiring to the appliance position is undersized or old.
In Inner West terraces, the kitchen and laundry are often at the back of the house while the meter box is at the front, which means a longer cable run through a narrow roof space or under a timber floor. Federation and inter-war homes sometimes have old cooker circuits sized for appliances from decades ago. We assess this on site and quote in writing.
Only if the installer is a licensed electrician. Delivery-only services can't legally connect fixed wiring.
No. You buy the appliance from your chosen retailer, and we install and connect it.
Often, if its rating suits the new appliance and the wiring is in good condition. We check the specifications and test the circuit before deciding.
Manufacturers generally require hardwired appliances to be installed by a licensed electrician, and DIY fixed wiring is illegal in NSW.
We confirm the supply is correct. If the fault is inside the appliance, it's a matter for the manufacturer's service network.
