BMW sells both fully electric models and plug-in hybrids, and plenty of households have one of each, or a BMW alongside another EV. We install home chargers that suit the whole garage.

BMW's electric range includes the i4, i5, i7, iX, iX1 and iX3, and there's a long list of plug-in hybrids across the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3 and X5. They all use a Type 2 inlet for AC charging in Australia, so one Type 2 wall charger can serve a BMW and most other EVs as well.
The question we hear most from BMW owners isn't which charger to buy, it's how to charge two cars without upgrading the whole supply. That's where load management comes in: chargers that share the available current, or that back off when the house is busy, let you charge both cars overnight without tripping the main switch.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We're an independent electrician with no affiliation to BMW. We assess the supply, plan the circuits and install and certify the chargers you choose.
A plug-in hybrid's battery is much smaller than a full EV's, so it refills in a fraction of the time on the same charger. Some PHEVs also accept AC power at a lower rate. Check your car's onboard charger rating in the owner's manual: there's little point in a high-output charger for a car that can only draw a modest current.
For the fully electric BMWs, a wall charger makes a big difference to how practical home charging is. You can set charge times and a target level in the My BMW app or in the car, which works well with off-peak tariffs or daytime solar. If you'd prefer the charger to soak up surplus solar automatically, pick a charger with a solar mode and we'll install the current measuring it needs.
We work out how much spare capacity your supply has in the evening and whether two chargers can share it.
Either built into the chargers or via a separate controller, so the combined load stays within what the supply can handle.
Two new circuits, or one circuit feeding two chargers, depending on the products. Crowded or old boards may need an upgrade.
Each charger needs the correct RCD type and overcurrent protection as specified by its manual.
Charge ports on different sides of different cars affect where each charger goes. We plan it so both cables reach without crossing.
1. Measure up. We look at your switchboard, main supply and evening loads, plus the garage layout and where each car's charge port sits.
2. Design and quote. We recommend one charger, two chargers, or a charger plus a dedicated outlet for the PHEV, with load management where it's needed.
3. Install. Circuits, protection and cables go in, the chargers are mounted and connected, and current limits are set so the house stays within its supply.
4. Test and certify. We test to AS/NZS 3000, charge both cars to confirm the sharing works, and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.
The combined load is too high for the supply. Load management or staggered schedules fix it.
Usually normal: the car's onboard charger sets the pace, not the wall unit.
Could be a schedule, a charge limit, or a protective device tripping. See EV charger tripping the breaker.
Stop charging and get it checked. See burning smell from a power point for what to do.
One charger charges one car at a time. If both cars need charging most nights, two chargers with load management usually work better than swapping plugs.
Not always. Its smaller battery may refill overnight from a portable cable on a dedicated outlet. We can advise based on how you use it.
The app controls the car's charging settings, such as timing and charge level, regardless of the wall charger. Charger features have their own app.
