Hunters Hill occupies a peninsula between the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers, governed by the Municipality of Hunter's Hill and supplied by Ausgrid. It is known for its nineteenth-century sandstone cottages and villas, Federation houses and large waterfront properties, much of it within heritage conservation areas.

Working with old houses

Solid sandstone walls, lath-and-plaster ceilings and original joinery leave little room for casual chasing and cutting. Rewiring a heritage home is planned room by room, using existing cavities, roof spaces and subfloors so that visible damage is kept to a minimum. Old rubber-insulated cable is still found in some houses here, and it should be replaced once identified; our guide on old wiring explains why.

Where the meter box is on a significant facade, heritage controls may limit where a new switchboard can go, so we check before proposing a location.

Waterfront and garden

Many properties have pools, boatsheds, jetties and extensive gardens. Power to these areas needs weatherproof equipment, RCD protection and careful routing on steep sandstone ground. Feature garden lighting is popular, as are gate intercoms and cameras.

Modern comforts

Owners renovating often add smart lighting control, an EV charger in the garage and data cabling for home offices, which all need capacity on the board.
