Narwee is a compact residential suburb on the boundary of the Georges River and Canterbury-Bankstown council areas, on the Ausgrid network. Its streets are filled mainly with red and liver brick bungalows from the 1940s to the 1960s, gradually being joined by two-storey rebuilds, granny flats and duplexes.

Common findings in older bungalows

• Fuse-style switchboards or boards with only one safety switch
• Lighting circuits with no RCD protection
• Power points without an earth in older rooms
• Additions wired off existing circuits that are now overloaded
• Halogen downlights running hot in the ceiling

What we recommend

The starting point is almost always the board. Replacing it with a modern switchboard fitted with safety switches on all circuits gives immediate protection. From there we test the existing cabling; if it is in good condition we leave it, and if not we propose a staged or full rewire.

Swapping old halogens for LED downlights reduces heat in the ceiling and lowers running costs.

Granny flats and rebuilds

A granny flat needs its own sub-board, correctly sized cable from the main board, and often a check that the house supply can handle both dwellings. For new builds we add the things owners usually want after handover: EV charging, fans, extra power points and cameras.
