Exit signs and emergency lights only matter on the worst day a building has, which is why they're easy to forget until a fit-out, an inspection or a failed test brings them up. We install, replace and test them for small commercial premises and strata common areas.
Ring 0421 772 661 to arrange a visit. We're a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park working across the Inner West and greater Sydney.
This page is about the installation work itself: wiring, mounting, replacing and testing fittings. If you want to know which buildings need emergency lighting and how often it must be tested, our guide to emergency exit lighting requirements in NSW explains that in detail, so we won't repeat it here.
In short, emergency luminaires light the path out when normal power fails, and exit signs show the way to the exits. Most fittings in small buildings are self-contained, meaning each has its own battery that charges from a permanently connected circuit and takes over when that supply drops out.
Fittings for a new shop, office, cafe or common area, positioned to suit the layout and any design documents from your certifier or fire consultant.
Old units whose batteries no longer hold charge, cracked diffusers, or signs that have faded or stopped lighting.
Swapping older fluorescent exit signs and emergency battens for LED fittings, which are typically lighter on battery demand.
Moving or adding fittings when walls, partitions or exit paths change during a refurbishment.
Discharge testing of fittings, recording results, and replacing batteries or units that fail.
Signs that won't switch to battery, fittings that stay dark, or circuits that trip.
Self-contained fittings need an unswitched active alongside the normal lighting supply, so the fitting can sense when the local lighting circuit fails and still keep its battery charged. Getting that wiring right is the part most often done wrong in DIY-style fit-outs, and it's why some fittings never actually switch over in a test.
We confirm positions against the layout and any documents your building certifier or fire safety consultant has provided, then run cabling, mount fittings to the ceiling or wall structure, and connect them to the correct circuit. In ceilings with limited access, such as older shopfronts with pressed metal or plaster ceilings, cable routes take more planning.
After installation each fitting is tested by simulating loss of supply, confirming it switches to battery and stays lit for its rated duration. Wiring is tested to AS/NZS 3000, and we lodge a CCEW for the electrical work. Test results can be written into your logbook.
Much of the Inner West's commercial stock is small: single-storey shops on King Street or Marrickville Road, upstairs offices above retail, converted warehouses, and walk-up apartment blocks with shared stairwells. Each brings its own practical issues, from high warehouse ceilings that need a ladder platform to stairwells where fittings must be reached without blocking the only exit.
For strata buildings we can work with your strata manager on access and scheduling. For tenancies, the landlord and tenant need to agree who is responsible for the fittings; we just need to know who is authorising the work. If you're planning a new tenancy, our shop fit-out electrical guide covers the wider picture.
The number of fittings, the type (exit sign, emergency batten, spitfire-style downlight), ceiling height and access, how far the cable runs are, and whether existing wiring includes the unswitched supply each fitting needs. Replacing like-for-like units on correct existing wiring is quicker than a new installation. Batch testing and replacement across a whole building is more efficient than one fitting at a time. We give a written quote after seeing the site.
Yes. We carry out discharge tests, record the results and replace batteries or fittings that fail. How often testing is needed is covered in our requirements guide.
For straightforward small premises we position fittings to suit the exits and paths of travel. Where a certifier or fire safety consultant has specified a layout, we install to their documents.
Usually a flat or failed battery, a failed lamp or driver, or incorrect wiring so the fitting never sees a supply loss. We test and tell you which.
Usually, yes. We check the fittings suit the location and wiring, then replace and test them.
Yes, in common areas such as stairwells, car parks and lobbies, arranged through the strata manager or owners corporation.
