Kettle tripping the safety switch?

Kettles are one of the most common reasons a safety switch trips in the kitchen. They mix water and a heating element in a small plastic body, and when either gets where it shouldn't, current leaks and the safety switch cuts the power.

Most of the time the fix is a new kettle. If the checks below point to the power point or the circuit instead, ring 0421 772 661.

Safety first

Before you do anything.

If the kettle base, plug or power point is scorched, melted or smells of burning, unplug only if you can do so without touching damaged parts, otherwise turn the circuit off at the switchboard. Don't use that outlet again until it's checked. Call 000 for fire or injury.

Never take a kettle apart to dry or fix it, and don't touch a power point that has water on or in it. Turn the power off at the switchboard first.

Quick test

Is it the kettle or the power point?

This takes very little time and answers the main question.

!

Unplug the kettle and reset

Unplug the kettle, reset the safety switch once, and check other things on that circuit come back on.

!

Check the base and cord

Look for water on the base, spills in the plug or a damaged cord. If the base got wet, the kettle should not be used until it's dried fully, and if it still trips, replaced.

!

Try a different appliance

Plug a toaster or lamp into the same power point. If that works fine, the kettle is almost certainly the problem.

!

Try the kettle once elsewhere

If you're unsure, try the kettle on another kitchen outlet. If it trips that one too, retire the kettle.

!

Look at the power point

Check for water splashes, discolouration or a loose face. A wet or damaged outlet near the sink can trip the switch whatever is plugged in.

The causes

What's really going on

Element breakdown. The heating element is sealed in an insulating layer. Over time, and with scale build-up, that insulation can break down and leak a small current to earth. A safety switch is designed to trip on exactly that.

Water in the base or connector. Overfilling, a cracked body or a kettle put back on a wet bench lets water reach the connector between the kettle and its base. That's often a temporary trip after a spill, but if it keeps happening the kettle has a leak.

A damaged cord. Cords pinched under appliances or burnt by a cooktop can expose wiring and leak current.

The power point or circuit. Less often, it's the outlet. Kitchen outlets near sinks get splashed, and a worn power point can trip or overheat under a high-draw appliance. If everything you plug in trips the same outlet, the outlet or its wiring needs testing.

Breaker or safety switch?

Two different trips, two different causes

Check which device actually tripped. A safety switch (often marked with a test button) trips on leakage, which usually means a faulty kettle or a wet outlet. A circuit breaker trips on overload: a kettle and toaster on the same double adaptor, or on a busy kitchen circuit, can draw more than the circuit can supply. The cure there is spreading the load, not a new kettle.

If your kitchen regularly overloads, more power points on more circuits will help. Our kitchen electrical planning guide covers how kitchens are usually split up, and microwave tripping the power covers the other common kitchen culprit.

When to call

When a new kettle won't fix it

Call an electrician if a new or known-good kettle still trips the switch, if the power point looks scorched or loose, if any appliance on that outlet trips it, or if the safety switch won't reset with everything unplugged. We test the outlet and circuit and fix the fault. For general tripping across the house, see safety switch keeps tripping.

Questions

Common questions.

Why does my kettle trip the safety switch?

Usually the element's insulation has broken down or water has got into the base, letting current leak to earth. A new kettle is normally the fix.

Can I dry the kettle and keep using it?

If it tripped once after an obvious spill and the base dries out completely, it may work again. If it trips repeatedly, replace it.

The kettle trips the breaker, not the safety switch. Why?

That's overload. The kettle plus other appliances on the same circuit or adaptor are drawing too much. Spread them across different outlets or circuits.

Could the power point be the problem?

Yes, if every appliance trips the same outlet, or it looks discoloured or loose. An electrician should test and replace it.

Is it safe to keep resetting the switch?

No. Reset once to test. If it trips again, stop using the kettle or outlet until the cause is found.
