Electrical work for offices

Small offices change constantly. Desks move, staff numbers grow, a meeting room becomes two, and the power and data that suited the old layout no longer fit. Electrical work in an office is mostly about keeping up with that change without disrupting the people working there.

Ring 0421 772 661 to discuss your office. Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, doing small commercial work across the Inner West and Sydney.

What offices need

Power and data where people sit.

The most common office request is simple: more power points where the desks are, so staff aren't running double adaptors and extension leads across walkways. Each workstation typically has a computer, monitors, phone chargers and sometimes a heater under the desk in winter, which adds up on a shared circuit.

Data matters as much as power. Wi-Fi suits laptops and phones, but fixed desks, printers and access points work better on cabled connections. Planning power and data together, with circuits sized for the number of workstations, avoids patching it later.

!

Power to workstations

Additional outlets and circuits so desks don't share an overloaded circuit. See power point installation.

!

Data cabling

Network points, a tidy comms cabinet and cabled access points. See data and NBN cabling.

!

LED lighting

Replacing old fluorescent fittings with LED panels and downlights for better light and lower running costs.

!

Kitchenette circuits

Dishwashers, boiling water units and fridges on suitable circuits so the kettle doesn't trip the floor.

Minimal disruption

Work done around staff.

Much office work can be done during business hours with care: running cable in the ceiling, fitting outlets at one desk at a time. Anything that needs the power off to a floor, or creates noise and dust, is better done after hours or on a weekend. That can be arranged in advance, and we confirm the timing with you before booking it in.

When power has to go off, we tell you which circuits and for how long, so servers and network equipment can be shut down properly first. Building access, keys and alarm codes are arranged with you or the building manager beforehand.

Ongoing upkeep

Keeping an office safe.

Beyond fit-outs, offices need routine attention: emergency and exit lighting that works when tested, portable appliances that are tagged where your workplace safety obligations call for it, and safety switch protection on circuits. Our guides on test and tag in NSW and emergency exit lighting explain what's usually involved.

If you lease your office, check your lease about who is responsible for which electrical work, as base building wiring often belongs to the landlord while tenancy fit-out wiring belongs to you. We invoice whichever party is responsible and provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required.

Moving in

Before you move offices.

If you're moving to new premises, a walk-through before the lease is signed or before the fit-out is finalised is worth it. We look at the switchboard, the number and location of outlets, the lighting and any existing data cabling, and tell you what needs adding so it's done before the desks arrive rather than after.

Questions

Common questions.

Can you add power points without shutting down the office?

Often, yes. Some work needs a circuit off briefly; anything that needs a longer shutdown can be scheduled after hours by arrangement.

Do you install data cabling as well as power?

Yes. We install network points and cabling alongside the electrical work so both are planned together.

Should we replace our fluorescent lights with LED?

In most offices it's worthwhile: better light quality, lower running costs and fewer failed tubes. We'll look at the fittings and ceiling type and quote options.

Who pays for electrical work in a leased office?

It depends on your lease. Base building wiring is often the landlord's and fit-out wiring the tenant's. Check your lease and we'll invoice accordingly.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Blue Link Electrical holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and is fully insured.
