An extension lead snaking out the back door is the usual sign a house needs an outdoor power point. We install weatherproof outlets on decks, patios, carports, side passages and garden walls, protected by a safety switch and tested before we leave.
Ring 0421 772 661 or send a photo of where you want the outlet and where your switchboard is. We'll give you a written quote before any work starts.
Putting a power point outside isn't just a matter of mounting an indoor outlet on a brick wall. The outlet itself needs to be rated for the weather, usually an enclosure with a hinged or spring-loaded lid that keeps rain off the socket while a plug is in use. The cable feeding it has to be protected from sun, garden tools and mechanical damage, which normally means running it inside the wall or roof space and only coming out at the outlet, or enclosing it in conduit where it has to travel across a surface.
Every new socket outlet we install in a home is protected by an RCD (safety switch). Outdoors that matters even more, because wet hands, wet ground and damaged leads are exactly the conditions where an earth leakage fault can hurt someone. If your switchboard has no safety switch on the circuit we plan to use, that becomes part of the quote. Our page on safety switch installation explains the options.
Most requests fall into a handful of patterns. Each one has slightly different needs for the outlet type, height and cable route.
A double outlet near the outdoor table for a heater, speaker or laptop. We position it clear of where water pools and away from the direct line of a hose.
Power for a rotisserie, fridge or lighting near the barbecue. A bar fridge running all year is a constant load, so we check the circuit can carry it.
For a pressure washer, vacuum or a plug-in EV lead as a stopgap. If you plan regular car charging, a dedicated charger circuit is the better answer.
Pond pumps, fountains and garden lighting transformers. We place the outlet so the plug pack sits off the ground and under cover where possible.
Common on terraces where the backyard is reached through a narrow side or a rear lane. Good for tools and cleaning gear without dragging leads through the house.
Running power to a separate building is a larger job with its own submain or circuit. Our guide to power to a shed or garage covers it.
The single biggest factor is the cable route. An outlet on the back wall of a single-storey cottage, directly behind an existing indoor power point, is usually straightforward. An outlet at the far end of a garden, or on the back of a two-storey house where the cable has to come down from the roof space, takes more time and more material.
Other things that move the price: whether the existing circuit has spare capacity or a new circuit is needed, whether the switchboard needs a safety switch added, the wall material (solid double brick versus timber cladding), whether trenching is involved for a freestanding post, and whether you want a single or double outlet, a switched outlet or an isolator. Our power point installation cost guide walks through these in more detail.
We start by looking at the switchboard and the wall you have in mind. That tells us which circuit the outlet can come off, whether it already has RCD protection, and the cleanest way to get the cable outside. You get a written quote with the outlet type and position spelled out, so there are no surprises on the day.
On install day we run the cable, mount the weatherproof enclosure at a sensible height, seal the wall penetration so water can't track inside, and connect at both ends. Then we test: insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity and an RCD trip test so you know the safety switch actually cuts the power when it should. Where the work requires it, we lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work and you get a copy for your records.
In Federation cottages and terraces around Hurlstone Park, Dulwich Hill and Marrickville, the back of the house is often a later addition: a skillion kitchen or laundry with its own patchwork of wiring. Sometimes the obvious circuit to extend is old, unprotected or already overloaded. We'll tell you if that's the case rather than tacking a new outdoor outlet onto a weak circuit. If an existing outside outlet keeps tripping in wet weather, see outdoor power point tripping first; the fix is sometimes a replacement rather than a new point.
We don't recommend it. Covered areas still get wind-driven rain, condensation and hose spray. A weatherproof outlet with a proper lid costs little more and lasts far longer outdoors.
New socket outlets in homes are installed with RCD protection, and we always fit outdoor outlets on an RCD-protected circuit. If your board doesn't have one for that circuit, we'll include it in the quote.
A portable charger can run from a suitable outlet, but long sessions at high current are hard on ordinary outlets. For regular charging we recommend a dedicated EV charger circuit. See our EV charger installation page.
High enough to stay clear of splashing and pooled water, and convenient for the plug you'll use. We agree the exact position with you on site; for garden equipment that often means mounting it on a wall or post rather than near ground level.
Yes, but pool and spa areas have specific zone rules. Read our pool and spa electrical requirements guide, then call us to look at your layout.
