Electrical work for childcare centres

In a childcare centre, electrical work has two constraints that most premises don't: small children who explore everything, and a strict routine that can't be interrupted. Repairs and upgrades need to fit around both.

Ring 0421 772 661 to discuss your centre. Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, doing small commercial work across the Inner West and Sydney.

Child-safe electrical

Designed around little hands.

Children reach, poke and pull. Outlets at floor level in play areas, exposed cords and loose fittings deserve more attention in a centre than in an office. Safety switch protection matters everywhere, but especially where children are present. Our guide to childproof power points explains the options for outlets.

Your regulatory and accreditation obligations are set by the relevant authorities and your approved provider, and we don't advise on those. What we can do is look at the electrical installation with children in mind and recommend practical improvements.

!

Outlet placement

Moving or adding outlets above child height in play rooms, and fitting outlets with shutters where they must stay low.

!

Safety switches

Confirming RCD protection on power and lighting circuits and testing that it operates. See safety switch installation.

!

Damaged fittings

Replacing cracked covers and loose switches promptly, before curious fingers find them.

!

Cord management

Adding outlets where appliances are used so leads don't trail across floors.

Lighting and comfort

Rooms that work all day.

Childcare rooms are used for play, meals and rest, often in the same space. Good lighting with dimming or separate switching for rest time is useful, along with ceiling fans or air conditioning on suitable circuits. Kitchens and laundries in centres run commercial-style loads, such as dishwashers and dryers, that may need their own circuits.

Outdoor play areas need lighting that's robust and positioned out of reach, and any outdoor outlets should be weatherproof and protected.

Emergency readiness

Exit lights, alarms and records.

Emergency and exit lighting needs to work when the power fails, and smoke alarm or detection systems need to be maintained. We replace failed emergency fittings and hardwired smoke alarms; fire detection panels and specialist fire systems are for a fire services contractor. Our emergency exit lighting guide covers the basics.

Portable appliances in a centre, such as kettles, heaters and kitchen gear, may need regular checks as part of your workplace safety arrangements. See test and tag in NSW. After each job we provide an itemised invoice and, where required, a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work for your records.

Scheduling

Work outside session times.

Wherever possible, electrical work happens when children aren't there: early morning, evenings, weekends or closure periods. These times are arranged in advance with the centre director. If a fault needs attention during the day, we work in an area that has been cleared and keep tools and materials secured.

Access, alarm codes and any sign-in procedures for visitors are agreed before we arrive. Licence details are available for your contractor register.

Questions

Common questions.

Can you work when children aren't on site?

Yes. Early-morning, evening, weekend and closure-period work can be arranged in advance with the centre.

What makes power points safer in a childcare centre?

Positioning outlets out of reach where possible, using shuttered outlets where they need to be low, replacing damaged fittings, and safety switch protection on the circuits.

Do you service fire alarm panels?

No. Fire detection panels and specialist fire systems are for a fire services contractor. We handle hardwired smoke alarms, emergency lighting and general electrical work.

Can you tell us what our regulations require?

Regulatory requirements for centres come from the relevant authorities and your approved provider. We can assess the electrical installation and fix what needs fixing.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C, fully insured, with details available for your records.
