Domus

Domus Downlight installation.

Domus is an Australian lighting company with downlights in a variety of styles, including different trim colours and fixed or adjustable heads, alongside other interior and exterior fittings. That makes it popular for renovations where the lighting is part of the design rather than an afterthought.

When the look matters, the installation detail matters too. Holes need to line up, spacing should be even, and the fittings should sit flush with no gaps around the trim. Under the ceiling, the same electrical basics apply as with any LED downlight: driver, insulation, dimmer and circuit.

Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install Domus downlights in houses, terraces and apartments across the Inner West, often alongside builders and designers during renovations.

Know your model

Getting the layout right.

Start with what the room is for. Kitchens benefit from lights over the benchtops so you're not working in your own shadow. Living areas often look better with fewer, well-placed lights and a dimmer, plus lamps or wall lights for atmosphere. Hallways need even spacing so there are no dark patches. Adjustable heads are useful for washing light onto artwork or a feature wall.

Then check the product sheet: cut-out size, insulation rating, dimmability and whether the colour temperature is fixed or selectable. Use one colour temperature throughout a room so the light looks consistent. Our LED downlight buying guide explains colour temperature, beam angle and brightness.

Before we install

What the installation needs.

!

Ceiling structure

Joists, ceiling battens and existing services decide where holes can go. We check from the roof space before marking out.

!

Insulation rating

Fittings not rated for insulation contact need clearance. We confirm the rating and the insulation type.

!

Dimming

Dimmable Domus fittings need an LED-suited dimmer that matches the driver and the total load.

!

Renovation timing

In a renovation, cabling goes in at rough-in before the ceiling is sheeted, and fittings go in once painting is done.

!

Switch layout

Two-way switching for hallways and stairs and separate circuits for zones make lighting easier to use.

How it works

How we install it.

1. Design and quote. We go over the plan with you or your designer, suggest spacing and switching, and quote in writing.

2. Rough-in. For renovations, cable goes in before the plasterboard. For existing ceilings, we run cable through the roof space and cut holes accurately.

3. Fit-off. Once painting's done, we connect drivers, fit the downlights, install dimmers and set colour temperature where the fitting allows.

4. Test and certify. We test the installation to AS/NZS 3000 and provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required. More on our downlight installation service.

Common problems

Common Domus problems.

!

Holes in the wrong spot

Not lining up with joists or each other. Planning from above first avoids it.

!

Patchy lighting

Too few lights or uneven spacing. A layout check before cutting saves rework.

!

Flicker at low levels

Usually a dimmer-driver mismatch. See dimmer switch buzzing.

!

Trim not sitting flush

An oversized hole or uneven plaster. Cutting to the exact specified size prevents it.

Questions

Domus Downlight: common questions.

Can you work with my designer's lighting plan?

Yes. We follow the plan and flag anything that clashes with joists, services or the wiring rules before work starts.

When should downlights go in during a renovation?

Cabling at rough-in before the ceiling is sheeted, and the fittings at fit-off after painting.

Should every room have dimmers?

Not necessarily. Living and dining areas and bedrooms benefit most. Laundries and bathrooms usually don't need them.

Do you supply Domus fittings?

We install them. Choose your fittings and we'll quote the installation.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Blue Link Electrical holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 332956C and is fully insured.
