SAL (Sunny Australia Lighting) LED downlights turn up in a lot of Sydney homes, from single-room swaps to whole-house relights. We fit them across the Inner West and greater Sydney.
Ring 0421 772 661 for a written quote. Tell us how many lights, what's there now and whether you want them dimmable.
SAL is an Australian lighting brand with a broad range of LED downlights, from basic fixed-white fittings through to models where you choose the colour temperature with a small switch on the driver or fitting. That makes them a common pick for renovations where people want warm light in living areas and something crisper in the kitchen or laundry.
A downlight looks simple from below, but the result depends on what happens above the ceiling: the hole size, the driver, how close insulation sits, and whether the dimmer on the wall actually suits the driver. Get any one of those wrong and you end up with flicker, buzzing or a fitting that runs hot.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We install the SAL downlights you've chosen, wire them to AS/NZS 3000, and test the circuit before we pack up.
SAL's range covers different cut-out sizes, trims (white, black, chrome and others), fixed and tilting heads, and dimmable and non-dimmable versions. Many of their newer domestic downlights let you set the colour temperature at install time, which is handy if you're unsure between warm white and natural white. The installation sheet for the exact model lists the cut-out size, whether it can be covered by insulation, and the dimmers it's been tested with, so we read that before we drill anything.
If you're replacing old halogen downlights, check the cut-out size first. Halogen holes vary, and an LED fitting with a matching or slightly larger cut-out saves patching the plaster. Our LED downlight buying guide covers lumens, beam angle and colour temperature in more detail.
Each fitting has a specified hole diameter. We match it to existing holes where possible, or cut new holes cleanly and avoid joists and services.
Ceiling insulation must suit the fitting's rating. IC-rated fittings can be covered; others need clearance, so we check the label and the roof space.
LED drivers sit in the ceiling. They need to be accessible through the hole and kept off hot surfaces and out of insulation where the manual says so.
If you want dimming, the wall dimmer has to suit the LED driver. A mismatch causes flicker, buzz or a narrow dimming range.
We check the lighting circuit has spare capacity, has safety switch protection and that the switching layout makes sense for the room.
Single-storey homes with a roof space are straightforward. Second-floor ceilings or flat roofs can need careful cable fishing.
1. Plan the layout. We agree positions, spacing and switching with you, and check the roof space for insulation type, joists and old wiring.
2. Cut and wire. Holes are cut to the manual's size, cable runs go to each position, and each driver is connected and placed so it can be reached later through the fitting.
3. Set and dim. Where the fitting has a colour temperature selector, we set it to what you've chosen before fitting it. Dimmers are matched to the drivers and the minimum level adjusted if the dimmer allows.
4. Test and certify. The circuit is tested to AS/NZS 3000 and you get a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required. See our downlight installation page for the wider service.
Usually the dimmer and driver don't suit each other, or the load is below the dimmer's minimum. See dimmer switch buzzing.
With selectable fittings, one switch set differently from the rest stands out. It's a quick fix once the fitting is down.
Halogen swaps sometimes leave old transformers in place. We remove them so the LED driver is the only thing powering the light.
Heat is the usual culprit: insulation packed over a fitting that isn't rated for it. Product faults go back to the supplier under their warranty.
Usually yes. We remove the old transformer, fit the LED driver and match the cut-out where possible so you don't need plaster patching.
They need a dimmer that suits the LED driver. The installation sheet lists compatible dimmers, and we check that before fitting.
Many SAL domestic downlights have a colour temperature selector. We set every light in a room to the same setting so they match.
