Brilliant is an Australian lighting brand stocked widely by electrical wholesalers and hardware stores, so plenty of homeowners arrive with a box of Brilliant downlights already in hand. Their range includes standard LED downlights and a smart line that connects over Wi-Fi, which changes how the wall switch should be set up.
With a standard downlight the job is about the hole, the driver, the insulation and the dimmer. With a smart downlight there's an extra question: if someone flicks the wall switch off, the light drops off the network and the app can't turn it back on. We talk that through before wiring so the switching suits how you'll actually use the room.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, NSW Contractor Licence 332956C. We fit Brilliant downlights for renovations, halogen replacements and new extensions across the Inner West.
For most rooms, a standard dimmable LED downlight with a matched wall dimmer is reliable and easy to live with. Brilliant's standard fittings come in a range of cut-outs and trims, and some let you choose the colour temperature. The model's instruction sheet gives the cut-out, insulation rating and dimmer notes, and we follow it rather than guessing.
Smart versions add app control, scheduling and colour changes, but they work best with the power left on permanently and control done in the app, by voice or via a compatible smart switch. They should not be put on an ordinary dimmer. If you're weighing up smart lighting across the whole house, our smart home wiring guide explains the options.
Brilliant fittings list a hole size. We reuse existing holes where they match and cut new ones with care around joists and existing cables.
We check whether the fitting is rated for insulation contact and keep clearances where it isn't, so it doesn't overheat.
Standard dimmable fittings need a dimmer suited to LED drivers. Smart fittings stay on a plain switch or a compatible smart control.
Smart downlights need a decent Wi-Fi signal at the ceiling. Weak spots cause dropouts, so check coverage before committing to a whole room.
Lighting circuits should be on RCD protection. Older boards without it may need work first.
1. Quote and layout. We confirm the fittings, positions, switching and whether any are smart, then give you a written quote.
2. Rough-in. We run cable to each position from the roof space, cut the holes to size and keep cable clear of hot spots and sharp edges.
3. Fit-off. Drivers are connected and placed so they can be reached through the hole. Standard fittings go on matched dimmers; smart fittings are left on a plain switch or a smart control and paired to the app with you.
4. Testing. We test the circuit to AS/NZS 3000 and provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work where required. More on the general service at downlight installation.
Most often the wall switch has been turned off, or the Wi-Fi signal is weak in that room. It's rarely a wiring fault.
An older or unsuitable dimmer struggling with LED drivers. Swapping to an LED-suited dimmer usually cures it. See dimmer switch buzzing.
Too few fittings, or a beam angle that's too narrow for the ceiling height. Planning spacing at the start avoids patchy rooms.
Could be a loose connection, a failed driver or a product fault. We test the circuit; faulty products go back to the supplier.
No. Smart downlights do their own dimming. Putting them on a normal dimmer causes faults. Keep them on a plain switch or a compatible smart control.
No. Turning the wall switch off cuts power, so the light can't respond to the app until power is back on.
We install the Brilliant fittings you've chosen. Tell us the model and quantity and we'll quote the installation.
It depends on the room size, ceiling height and fitting output. Our buying guide explains it, and we'll suggest a layout on site.
