MG owners often bought their car because it was good value, and they want the same from home charging. We'll tell you honestly whether a wall charger is worth it for the way you drive, then install it properly.
Ring 0421 772 661 for a written quote. Let us know your model, roughly how far you drive each week, and where you park.
The MG4 and MG ZS EV are among the most common electric cars in Sydney streets and driveways. Both use the standard Type 2 plug for AC charging, which means you can choose from a wide range of wall chargers rather than one brand's product.
Not every MG owner needs an expensive charger. If you drive short distances and park at home most nights, a portable cable on a correctly installed dedicated outlet can be enough. If you commute further, share the car, or want to charge only in cheaper off-peak or solar hours, a wall charger gives you the speed to fit charging into a shorter window.
Blue Link Electrical is a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C), working across the Inner West and Sydney. We're an independent electrician, not connected to MG. We'll quote the option that suits you and explain what drives the cost.
The car decides how fast it will accept AC power, not the charger. MG models and trim levels differ in their onboard charger, so check your car's onboard charger rating in the owner's manual or on the compliance documents before buying a charger. Paying for a three-phase unit makes no difference if your MG only draws on one phase.
A good way to think about it: work out how many kilometres you add back on a normal day, and how many hours the car sits in the driveway overnight. If a modest charger covers that comfortably, spend the money on a tidy installation and good protection rather than extra capacity you'll never use. Our EV charger cost guide explains what changes the price.
Whether it's a wall charger or a heavy-duty outlet for a portable cable, it needs its own circuit rather than sharing with the laundry or kitchen.
Space for the new circuit, and RCD protection that suits EV charging. Ceramic fuses mean an upgrade comes first.
The closer the switchboard is to the parking spot, the lower the cost. Long runs under the house or through the roof add labour and larger cable.
Carport and driveway chargers need a suitable weather rating and a spot out of direct rain where possible.
If you're on a time-of-use tariff, the MG's own app or the charger can schedule charging into cheaper hours.
1. Advice and quote. We ask how you use the car, look at the switchboard and parking, and recommend either a wall charger or a dedicated outlet, with a written quote.
2. Circuit. We fit the new circuit protection at the switchboard and run the cable by the most practical route to where you park.
3. Fit the charger or outlet. The unit is fixed to the wall, connected and configured. If it's a smart charger, we connect it to Wi-Fi and show you the app.
4. Test and paperwork. Everything is tested to AS/NZS 3000, we confirm the MG charges, and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.
Often the outlet or circuit is shared or overloaded, or the safety switch is tripping. See safety switch keeps tripping.
Running a charging cable through an extension lead is a common cause of overheated plugs. A properly placed outlet or wall charger removes the need.
A charge schedule set in both the car and the charger can conflict. Use one or the other.
Usually Wi-Fi coverage in the garage, not an electrical fault. Charging generally still works.
It depends on your driving. Short daily trips may be covered by a portable cable on a dedicated outlet. Longer commutes or off-peak-only charging usually justify a wall charger.
Many people do with the portable cable, but long charging sessions are hard on an ordinary outlet. Having it on its own circuit and checked is the safer approach.
Only if your MG's onboard charger can use three phases and your home has a three-phase supply. Check the owner's manual first.
No. We're an independent licensed electrician with no affiliation to MG. We install and certify the electrical side; car and charger warranties stay with their makers.
It depends mostly on the switchboard and the length of the cable run. We give a written quote first, and our cost guide explains the main factors.
