Clipsal Iconic vs Clipsal Saturn

Iconic and Saturn are two of Clipsal's design-focused ranges of switches and power points. Both are a step up in looks from the basic white plates found in most homes; they differ mainly in styling and how you build up the finished look.

Ring 0421 772 661 to replace switches and power points with either range. We supply the labour and wiring; you choose the finish.

The ranges

Two design approaches from one maker.

Clipsal Iconic is a modular range. A mounting grid with the mechanisms sits on the wall, and a separate cover plate, or skin, clips over the top. That means you can change the look later by swapping the skins without rewiring. The range covers switches, power points, dimmers, USB outlets, data and TV points and more, in a wide choice of colours and finishes.

Clipsal Saturn is positioned as a more premium, design-led range with its own distinct styling and finishes. It suits people who want switches and outlets to read as a deliberate part of the interior rather than blending in. Like Iconic, it covers the common functions found in a home.

Finishes, colours and the exact product line-up change over time, so check Clipsal's current catalogue or a supplier's display before you decide. Seeing the plates in person is worth it; photos don't show texture and depth well.

Which suits whom

Matching the range to the project.

!

Want to change the look later

Iconic's separate skins are its big advantage. Repaint the room, swap the covers.

!

Feature-led interior design

Saturn suits homes where the designer is choosing every visible fitting and wants a distinctive look.

!

Whole-house refresh on a budget

Iconic is often the practical middle ground: noticeably nicer than a standard plate without going to the top of the range.

!

Matching existing fittings

If part of the house already has one range, staying with it keeps things consistent from room to room.

!

Smart home plans

Check which smart switches and dimmers are available in the range and finish you want before you commit.

!

Rentals

Durability and easy replacement usually matter more than styling, which tends to favour a mainstream range.

Installation

What changes behind the plate.

From an electrician's view, both are installed the same way as any quality switch or outlet: isolate the circuit, check the existing cable, fit the new mechanism and plate, then test. The differences that matter in practice are depth and size. Some mechanisms, especially dimmers and USB outlets, are deeper than a basic switch, and older Inner West homes often have shallow wall boxes, timber mounting blocks or none at all.

Changing plates is also a chance to check the wiring at each point. In older terraces and Federation homes we sometimes find perished rubber insulation, missing earths on power points, or switches wired in ways that won't suit modern dimmers. Fixing those as you go is usually far easier than coming back later. Our old wiring guide explains what to look for.

We install both ranges and have pages on each: Clipsal Iconic installation and Clipsal Saturn installation.

Questions

Common questions.

Can I swap Iconic covers myself?

The decorative skin on Iconic can be changed without touching wiring, following Clipsal's instructions. Anything involving the mechanism or wiring is licensed electrical work.

Is Saturn worth the extra?

It depends on how much the look matters to you. Functionally both do the same job; the difference is design and finish.

Can I mix Iconic and Saturn in one house?

Yes. Some people use a premium range in living areas and a more economical one in laundries, garages and bedrooms.

Will they fit my old switch holes?

Usually, but deeper mechanisms may need a new wall box or mounting block in older homes. We check on site.

Do you supply the switches?

We install and wire them. Tell us the range and finish you've chosen and we'll quote the installation.
