Something has stopped working, is tripping, or doesn't look right. Most household electrical repairs come down to a single failed component or a loose connection, but finding it properly matters more than replacing parts at random.
Ring 0421 772 661 and describe what's happening. We're a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park, repairing faults in homes and small businesses across the Inner West and greater Sydney.
A repair is any job where existing wiring or equipment has failed, been damaged or worn out, as opposed to adding something new. In practice that covers a wide range of jobs, from a cracked switch plate to a circuit that keeps tripping the safety switch every time it rains.
The common thread is that the cause has to be confirmed before the fix. A dead power point might be the outlet itself, a loose connection at the outlet upstream of it, a tripped protection device or damaged cable in the wall. Each needs a different repair, so we test rather than guess.
One outlet, one room or a whole circuit with no power. Often a failed connection somewhere along the circuit. Our guide to a power point not working covers safe checks first.
An RCD that trips repeatedly is reacting to leakage current from an appliance or damaged wiring. We isolate the circuit or appliance responsible.
Cracked faces, loose mechanisms, scorch marks or outlets that no longer grip a plug. These are replaced like for like or upgraded.
Loose terminations, incompatible dimmers and LED drivers at the end of their life are typical culprits.
Cables nicked by renovators, chewed by rodents in the roof, or cooked by old halogen downlights. The damaged section is cut out and repaired or replaced.
Water in outdoor fittings or through the ceiling. We make the circuit safe, let it dry out and test it before it's used again.
When you call, we ask what stopped working, when it started and whether anything else changed: new appliance, recent storm, renovation work, a tripping switch. That conversation often narrows the problem down before we arrive and helps us bring the right parts.
On site we start at the switchboard, check which protection device is involved, and then test along the circuit with proper instruments: insulation resistance to find leakage, continuity to find open connections, and load tests where needed. Our electrical fault finding page goes deeper on the diagnostic side.
Once the cause is clear we explain it and the repair options in plain terms before going ahead. Small repairs are usually fixed on the spot if we have the part. Anything larger, such as a section of rewiring or a switchboard change, gets a written quote so you can decide. After the repair we retest the circuit, and where the work requires one we lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.
Many homes around Hurlstone Park, Marrickville, Petersham and Annandale still carry wiring from several eras at once: some original cable, some 1970s additions, some recent renovation work. Repairs in these houses need a bit more care, because disturbing old rubber-insulated cable can make it crumble, and a single circuit may wander through several rooms.
Where a repair uncovers wiring that is past its useful life, we tell you honestly rather than patching it and walking away. Sometimes the right answer is a targeted fix now and a plan for the rest later. Our guide to old wiring in Inner West terraces explains what we commonly find. Ceramic fuse boards are another common discovery; see what to do about a blown ceramic fuse.
The biggest variable is how long it takes to locate the fault. A visible broken switch is quick; an intermittent trip that only happens on wet nights takes longer to track down. After that, cost depends on the parts involved, access (a cramped roof void or a sub-floor with little clearance slows things down), and whether the repair reveals other work that should be done at the same time.
We don't quote fixed prices over the phone for faults we haven't seen, because the honest answer depends on the cause. We do explain how we charge before we start and give a written quote for any larger repair before work goes ahead.
No. A safety switch or breaker that trips repeatedly is warning you about a fault. Reset it once; if it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician.
Not in NSW. Fixed wiring work, including replacing switches and outlets, must be done by a licensed electrician.
We repair the electrical supply to appliances, such as circuits, outlets, isolators and hardwired connections. Faults inside an appliance go to the manufacturer's service network.
If there's sparking, a burning smell or no power to essential circuits, tell us when you call and we'll prioritise it where we can. For danger to life call 000; for street outages call Ausgrid on 13 13 88.
