Sanden is a Japanese company well known for CO2 heat pump water heaters, with a separate outdoor heat pump unit and a stainless steel storage tank. We do the electrical installation for Sanden systems around the Inner West and Sydney.

Sanden's heat pumps use CO2 (R744) as the refrigerant, which is widely recognised for its low environmental impact and its ability to heat water to high temperatures even when the outside air is cold. The system splits into two parts: a compact outdoor unit that does the heating and a tank that stores the hot water.
In Inner West homes, the split design is handy. The tank can go where the old hot water service stood, often down a narrow side passage or in a back courtyard, while the heat pump unit goes wherever there's airflow and the noise won't bother anyone. That flexibility suits tight terrace sites well.
We're Blue Link Electrical, a licensed electrician based in Hurlstone Park (NSW Contractor Licence 332956C). We supply the circuit, isolation and protection and test the installation. The water connections and valves are plumbing work for a licensed plumber; we can coordinate with yours.
Sanden systems are offered with different tank capacities to suit different household sizes. Bigger isn't automatically better: a tank that suits your household's daily use runs efficiently and takes up less space. The installation manual sets out the electrical supply and clearances for the outdoor unit, and that's what we install to.
Because the outdoor unit can be some distance from the tank, it's worth planning both positions together with your plumber. The electrical supply goes to the outdoor unit, so its location sets the cable route from the switchboard. In a terrace with the switchboard at the front and the hot water at the back, that run needs thought.
Run from the switchboard to the heat pump unit and protected by an RCD or RCBO, sized to Sanden's installation requirements.
A weatherproof isolating switch beside the outdoor unit for safe servicing.
The outdoor unit needs space around it to breathe. Tucking it into a cramped corner reduces performance.
Away from bedroom windows next door. NSW noise rules can apply to equipment heard in a neighbour's home at night.
Run on a timer during the day (good with solar), or from an off-peak controlled-load circuit if your meter has one.
Older switchboards may need work to add the circuit safely. See signs you need a switchboard upgrade.
1. Site check. We check the switchboard, the existing hot water circuit and the cable route to where the outdoor unit will sit. A written quote follows.
2. Wiring. We install the circuit and protection, run cable to the outdoor unit location and fit the isolator. In terraces this often means running along the side of the house in conduit.
3. Connection. Once the plumber has the tank and unit installed and filled, we connect the supply per Sanden's installation instructions and set up any timer you want.
4. Testing and paperwork. We test to AS/NZS 3000 and provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. NSW energy-saving incentives may be available for heat pumps; check current eligibility. Read our heat pump electrical guide.
Often water getting into an outdoor isolator or connection. See heat pump tripping the safety switch.
If it's on an off-peak circuit, it may not be getting enough run time. If power is fine, it's a unit issue for Sanden's service network.
Timer settings can shift running to daytime hours. Relocating is the other option.
A circuit from a previous system may not suit the new one. We check and upgrade if needed.
CO2 heat pumps are known for working well in cooler air, and Sydney winters are mild. Check the manufacturer's operating range for detail.
Off-peak or controlled-load tariffs heat overnight at lower rates on many plans. If you have solar, daytime running on a timer can use your own power instead. It depends on your tariff and setup.
Incentives may be available under NSW energy-saving programs. Check current eligibility before purchasing.
