Ducted vs recirculating rangehoods

A ducted rangehood sends cooking fumes outside through a duct. A recirculating rangehood pulls air through filters and returns it to the kitchen. Which is right depends less on the rangehood and more on where your kitchen sits in the building.

Ring 0421 772 661 for the electrical connection of either type. We'll work around your cabinet maker or builder for the duct.

Performance

Removing moisture versus filtering smells

Ducting outside removes steam, heat, grease and smells from the house altogether. That's a big advantage for frequent cooks, high-heat cooking and kitchens open to living areas. Excess moisture left inside can contribute to condensation and mould, which older, less-ventilated homes are prone to.

Recirculating hoods trap grease in a mesh filter and reduce odours with a carbon (charcoal) filter, then blow the air back into the room. They don't remove moisture or heat, and the carbon filters need replacing periodically to keep working. On the other hand, they can go almost anywhere because there's no duct to route.

!

Ducted suits

Houses with a practical path to an external wall or roof, keen cooks, and open-plan kitchens.

!

Recirculating suits

Apartments where ducting outside isn't permitted or practical, island benches with no ceiling route, and lighter cooking.

!

Some do both

Many rangehoods can be set up either way with a conversion kit. Check the model before you buy.

Installation

The duct is the big job

For a ducted hood, the work that varies most is getting the duct outside: through an external wall, up through the ceiling and roof, or along a bulkhead. That usually involves a carpenter, roofer or builder, and in strata buildings it may need approval from the owners corporation. Duct length and bends affect how well the hood performs, so shorter and straighter is better.

A recirculating hood skips all that. It mounts, plugs in or is hard-wired, and that's it, which makes it common in apartment kitchens across Marrickville and Camperdown and anywhere a duct isn't possible.

Electrical

Power for the hood, either way

The electrical side is similar for both. Most rangehoods connect to a power point inside the cabinet or canopy above, or are hard-wired, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Larger hoods with external or in-line motors may need extra wiring to the remote motor. If a new rangehood is going where there was none, we'll run a new circuit or extend an existing one and fit the outlet in a concealed spot.

We also check lighting in the hood and any switching you want. Our rangehood installation in Dulwich Hill shows a typical concealed connection.

Choosing

A practical way to decide

If you can duct outside without major building work, ducted is generally the more effective option. If you can't, a good recirculating hood with fresh filters is a sensible alternative. Size the hood to the cooktop, and think about noise: higher extraction usually means more fan noise at top speed.

Questions

Common questions.

Do recirculating rangehoods work?

They filter grease and reduce smells, but they don't remove steam or heat. Carbon filters need regular replacement to stay effective.

Can I duct a rangehood in an apartment?

Sometimes, if there's an approved route outside. Check with your strata manager before planning it.

Does a rangehood need its own circuit?

Usually not. Most connect to a power point or a lighting or power circuit nearby, per the manual.

Do you install the ductwork?

We handle the electrical connection. Ducting through walls or roofs is usually done by a builder, carpenter or roofer.

Can you replace my old rangehood?

Yes. We disconnect the old one and connect the new one, checking the outlet and wiring are suitable.
