Ring, owned by Amazon, and Google's Nest are the two video doorbell names most people know. Both do the core job well: a camera at the door, a notification on your phone, and two-way talk. The real differences are the ecosystem each belongs to and how you prefer to pay for recorded video.
Ring 0421 772 661 if you want a wired doorbell installed properly, with a suitable low-voltage supply. We hold NSW Security Licence S00014414.
The simplest way to decide is to look at what's already in your home. Ring works naturally with Amazon Alexa and Echo devices, so a doorbell press can show on an Echo Show screen. Nest works naturally with Google Home and Nest Hub displays. Each can be used without the other company's speakers, but integration is smoother within its own family.
If you already have Ring cameras or Nest cameras elsewhere on the property, matching the doorbell to them keeps everything in one app. Mixing brands means two apps and two sets of settings.
Both offer subscription plans (Ring Protect and Nest Aware) for saving clips and history. Check what each model does without one, as features vary.
Both brands sell battery and wired models. Battery means no wiring but regular charging; wired means continuous power and no charging.
Both offer person and package alerts on various models, often linked to the subscription. Compare the exact model.
Each brand has its own plug-in chime, and wired models may work with some existing chimes. Check compatibility.
Both apps let you set privacy zones and control sharing. Take a few minutes to review them after setup.
Ring has a broad lineup of cameras and lights; Nest pairs with Google's thermostats, speakers and displays.
In the US, many homes already have a doorbell transformer and wiring, which is what wired video doorbells were designed around. Most Sydney homes don't. A wired Ring or Nest here usually needs a suitable low-voltage power supply, either a transformer near the switchboard or a dedicated supply, and a small cable run to the door. Check the voltage and power requirements in the product manual; an undersized supply is a common cause of doorbells dropping offline.
On a terrace with a front door close to the switchboard this is often a short job. Federation cottages with a front verandah, or homes where the doorbell needs to go on a gate, take more planning, and Wi-Fi strength at the door matters for either brand. If your front gate is the real entry point, a video intercom may suit better than any doorbell.
Any new 230 V wiring for a transformer is licensed electrical work, and the low-voltage cabling is security work. We do both, test the supply, and set the doorbell up on your network. If your existing wired doorbell has problems, see wired Ring doorbell not working or wired Nest doorbell has no power.
Neither is clearly better. Pick the one that fits the smart speakers, displays and cameras you already have, then compare the specific models.
You can get live view and alerts without one on most models, but saved video history generally needs the brand's paid plan. Check current plan details.
Connecting to an existing low-voltage supply is simple, but installing a transformer or any 230 V wiring must be done by a licensed electrician.
Common causes are weak Wi-Fi at the door or a power supply that doesn't meet the doorbell's requirements.
Possibly, but many older Australian chimes aren't compatible. The brand's own plug-in chime is the simple fix.
